Florida man charged with making bomb threat at Liberty Hotel

Boston Police report arresting a Liberty Hotel guest who allegedly responded to an innocent question from a woman at the hotel bar that he had a bomb in his suitcase Wednesday night.

Police say Mark DiPaolo, 62, of Naples, FL was charged with making a bomb or hijack threat. He now faces a probable cause hearing in Boston Municipal Court on June 12, according to court records.

Police say DiPaolo was in the bar shortly after 8 p.m., when a woman tried to make some casual conversation by asking about his dog - police did not specify if DiPaolo had his dog with him at the time - the hotel is noted for its dog friendliness - if he was waving a photo of his pet or talking about it. Regardless, the conversation did not get very far, police say:

The patron stated that she had asked the suspect if his dog was trained in anything, and he replied “I have a bomb in my suitcase.” Fearing for her safety, the patron immediately reported the threat to hotel staff.

Officers immediately began an investigation into the description and whereabouts of the suspect, and were able to obtain an accurate description of the suspect and the suitcase in his possession after speaking with several witnesses. One witness last saw the suspect only a few minutes prior to the arrival of officers, possibly checking into a hotel room with a large brown suitcase.

With the cooperation of hotel staff, Officers were able to identify the hotel room that the suspect had booked and was possibly located in, so they began an approach to the room. Officers were able to locate the suspect inside of the room and he was arrested after being positively identified by Officers and several witnesses.

Police report officers did not find a bomb in his room.

Innocent, etc.

He made an untrue statement. I’d like to see the elements of this offense because it seems like a flimsy set of facts. He didn’t even initiate the conversation.

or are you happy to see me?

Lousy pickup line, but it might make a decent blues lyric.

But it sounds like an open-and-shut case of bad judgment.

The question the woman asked about his dog or the bomb disclosure? Maybe she was hitting in him and he was trying to get her to leave him alone with his doggie.

Florida man, Florida man
Doing the things only Florida can
What's with the dog? It's not important
Florida man

Is he a nut, or is he a jerk?
Will his suitcase bomb even work?
Or will he go to jail instead?
Nobody knows, Florida man

He was most likely in a bar called Clink where there still are jail doors.

That's what booking.com lists a room at the Liberty right now.

Name and age of the defendant matches up with a real estate guy in Florida who seems to be living the dream.

His defense lawyer is going to run her record and send an investigator to check her out right away.

The offense c.269 s 14 is not a District Court one, but has to be indicted by Grand Jury or have a probable cause hearing for trial in Superior Court. Minimum penalty is a $1000 fine.

I doubt it's going to go that far.

...when it was the Charles Street Jail?

...some random woman comes up to me and asks me about my dog. I reply, "there's a bomb in my suitcase".

That sequence of events makes no sense; it almost sounds like a Monty Python Hungarian phrase book sketch.

Once I met a man who thought the newspaper that I was reading was a gun.

he was training his dog to sniff out bombs, trying to joke around, and there was a fair amount of alcohol involved. And his hovercraft was full of eels.
