Harvard to build public dock in Brighton to keep the hoi polloi away from its two boathouses
By adamg on Mon, 09/23/2024 - 8:50am
The Crimson reports Harvard University will built and maintain a public dock at Herter Park, along the Charles River in Brighton, not because it really wants to, but as part of a deal to win state approval to allow renovations at its current boathouses, one on each side of the river - on shoreland that state law normally requires be open to the public.

Separate but Equal
One would expect nothing less from Harvard.
Universities love fancy boathouses on public land
They just seem to forget the "public" part when it becomes inconvenient and they are feeling territorial.
Tufts sailing on Upper Mystic Lake has had to have the police remind them repeatedly that they can't block the boat ramp and public parking for that ramp, and that the public parking is not their private boathouse parking.
No, Harvard.
No, Harvard.
As long as we're being
As long as we're being pedantic (which we weren't, but we are now) ... Can we discuss "the hoi polloi" in the context of "ATM Machine", "Rio Grande River", "LCD Display", "PIN Number", and "HRT Therapy"?
I'm not Johnny Government
As you all know, but one exception is the enforcement of public access to waterways. Those are for all.
