So many residential fires could have been prevented..
… by functioning smoke detectors, no smoking and no open flame (such as candles) policies in place and observed. Proper use of extension cords, cooking equipment etc.
I hope no one was badly harmed, though the trauma from such a close call can be seriously damaging.
Thank you, firefighters!
That's a lot of common sense
Unfortunately most don't have it. I remember the time a friend of mine was so proud of himself for cutting off the ground prong from his appliances power cord to make it fit in the old ungrounded socket. Another time he daisy chained power strips because he didn't have a proper extension cord and then wondered why the outlet on the strip furthest up in the chain was blackened and melted.
whose "common sense"?
Common sense would state that landlords should make sure the electrical system in the units they rent out would be up to code, and yet outdated 2-prong outlets are rife in Greater Boston. Residents make do with what they have to work with, and if what they have to work with is a fire hazard, is it their fault?
What caused the fire?
Do we even know?
As it seems to have started in the attic, it may not have had anything to do with smoking, candles, extension cords, etc.
