Thermal inversion still in place, keeping brush-fire smoke trapped

Thermal inversion from Winthrop

Yesterday, a thermal inversion meant smoke from fires in Salem and nearby communities stayed close to the ground and came down into the Boston area. The thermal inversion is still there this morning as Nicholas Agri shows in photos from the Cottage Park Yacht Club in Winthrop. He reports the wind was blowing east today, but some folks are still reporting the odor of smoke.

At least, not a temporal inversion.

They finally got the fire by the Rez in Canton under control after a couple of days. The haze was so bad it seemed like fog, and I still smell it 20 miles away in a sealed HVAC environment at work, so it must be on my clothes or up my nose.

My hoodie *reeked* of smoke when I got inside the other morning. I had had a mask on so I didn't even notice until I got inside and took it off...

My coworker says her apartment and the hallways and stairwells in her building all reeked of smoke this morning.

Good thing it's supposed to rain in a few hours.

Yet another use for Dawn dishwashing liquid or equivalent. You can use that to wash down the walls if it gets to be too bad. TSP if that isn't enough.

Had to do this to my aunt's place in Oregon after the wildfires there a few years back. It looked like someone had been smoking in the apartment for 20 years, even though it was painted white in 2012 and nobody smoked in there since 2007. The rental car I got had a note in it that the smoke smell wasn't from someone smoking in the car - and don't even think of smoking in the car because of that.

Washing clothes with the degreasing type of dishwashing liquid helps, too, with an extra rinse and then your regular detergent if you like. I have used that on smoked out clothes from camping, from boys at summer camp, and after visiting my brother in Alberta in 2023.
