311 complaint of the day: Dorchester has the most banal criminals

X sprayed across the explanation of the Scarecrow mural in Dorchester

A disgusted resident filed a 311 complaint today about the X somebody spray painted across the explanation on the mural that honors Dorchester's own Ray Bolger, who played the Scarecrow in "The Wizard of Oz:"

Sad, People are just culturally illiterate aren't they? This is why we can't have cool things in Dorchester. We are held Hostage by banal criminals.

The mural just after it was painted.

Should somebody check on the giant pear?

Just Kidding.

Ah, this corner.

On the opposite corner of St. Mark's and Dot, Cumberland Farms tried to open in the late 70's. A few other local grocers objected and things got very hot inside the Cumberland Farms, twice. They got the message.

Thanks for such a fond remembrance.

Ach! Almost went a whole day without a Wicked reference. It was a nice couple weeks between the oppressive monotony of the Craig &. Ayotte ads to now with the ads and screen savers filling my living room with the big green face lady and the bony faced lady. I can’t find a nicer word than “bony.” Emaciated maybe. All orbit and mandible.

I was aiming for the onomatopoeia of my familial expression of annoyance and mild disgust.

Actually Ray Bolger was born in Southie in Second St.

This 311 commenter needs to write more!
“ We are held Hostage by banal criminals.”
Honestly, this quote really captures the spirit of the era we are living in. Talented writer.

File under "this is why we can't have nice things".

Sad people are like this. But on brand for today's selfish attitude people have.

and monuments has been normalized in this town....this doesn't surprise me at all. I'm sure some little brat had their own twisted reason for doing this, and that's apparently all one needs for this to be justified now.

People aren't connected to it, so they don't care. The excuse is "I was here, I had some spray paint so I put my mark". Nothing about Ray Bolger personally, who did it prob didn't even know who he was.

Remember that movie came out over 85 years ago. Bolger died over 35 years ago. There are kids out there that didnt grow up with this movie.

It really boils down to respect. Fine you want to mark somewhere, go find a blank wall, not a monument to a person. If people thought enough to erect a monument to a person (in this case, a mural), regardless of how you feel about the person or monument, respect that others have thought enough and put time in to build it so leave it alone.

Some people just don't get it. And this was put up in 2016, so its not even 10 years old. I hope they can remove the spray paint without harming the mural paint.

What is odd is that this is a plain X. Not a full fledged tag. But a mark that crosses something out. This reminds me of the custom of defacing monuments for reason, whether religious or political. Doubtful if this is an act of anger specifically against Ray Bolger.

On the other hand this resembles the gang bangers technique of crossing out graffiti drawn by a rival gang member. Perhaps that is the reason for the X. To send a message to someone in the neighborhood. Maybe a message to someone who said that they liked the commemoration.

It could be just a desire to deface. But then why just an X? Why not a larger mark?

That was my thought as well. Somebodies jealous.

Maybe someone confused him with the Bulger family?

crossed my mind.

"Ray Bolger is looking out for Ray Bolger!"
