White Stadium controversy continues to kick around

The Dorchester Reporter sums up the latest news on the plans to rebuild White Stadium as a professional soccer arena with modern BPS facilities, which includes rising cost estimates, possible court delays and now the opposition of City Councilor and possible Wu opponent Ed Flynn.

Last night, Wu took to Bluesky to explain her support for the plans and answer questions.

But I don't love this plan.

There's lots of arguments on many issues. But I really think the primary sticking point is going to be the transportation / parking access.

The city can wish and pray that people will take "alternative means" and use their "transportation access plan"... but the reality is that people visiting Boston for a game do not want to have to drive all the way into the city, only to park their car far away and have to hop on another bus to get to and from the game.

Fundamentally, visitors are going to want to park closer to the stadium, and without actual parking or closer facilities provided other than catching a bus from JFK or Forest Hills or Fields Corner, then they are going to try to find neighborhood parking, which is a recipe for neighborhood revolt.

As a Boston resident, I'll say I'll do almost anything to avoid riding a shuttle bus. So I can hardly blame out of towners for wanting to do the same, as they surely will. If this stadium were adjacent to an MBTA train station it would be another story entirely, but it's not.

I just don’t know. The pros and cons of this project leave me unsure if it’s a good idea or bad. I do feel if it doesn’t happen now it won’t happen at all though.

I accept that my residential property taxes will increase due to the lower assessments of large buildings owned real estate trusts. Their money and lawyers won the day with the help of that creep Nick Collins.

But now that this stadium will require over $90 million I've had enough. The other issues were already making the whole thing suspicious. But for Wu to expect that city home owners let themselves be squeezed for what will be most likely be over $100 million after all is said and done is wrong.

I like Wu. But she is close to being a mayor for the small group of greedy rich people who see White Stadium as a profit center, with throwing crumbs to school use and an f you to people living near the stadium and ultimately to homeowners across the board.

Stop and go read the Bluesky thread. It’ll take you 90 seconds.

“she is close to being a mayor for the small group of greedy rich.”

No, you’re talking about Ed Flynn, the Pats owner’s nepo baby son, Marty Walsh and the long line of baby boys who’ve left us with an unusable White Stadium because saying no to public schools is much easier than saying no to the small group of greedy rich people in Back Bay. (Silver lining: you can vote for one of those losers in 12 months, watch them lose by 20 points to Wu.)

For the inevitable Wu (open pocketbook and makes everyone pay via property taxes) loss.

When White Stadium was originally built they doubled the estimated cost before completion. We're still talking about rebuilding and the estimated price has already tripled. It's a boondoggle of epic proportions and this is with a for-profit organization. Bostonians should not complete this project regardless of who is mayor.

Start over!

Fascinating, can you share a source for that original construction cost increase?

Projects like this always end up costing more. And when they’re done, most residents (the ones who aren’t angry misers) end up enjoying them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Stadium was my original source.

However, with further investigation the Franklin Park Coalition lists the final price as 2 million.
