City raises cane over stench at BU-adjacent chicken-finger joint
By adamg on Wed, 01/08/2025 - 9:57am
The Daily Free Press reports on the "fowl odor" that has shut the Raising Cane's on Comm. Ave., near Agganis Arena. ISD and the chain can't agree where the smell in the dining area is coming from - the chain blames the city and its aging infrastructure - but the chain is hoping to re-open in time to feed ravenous Terriers their accustomed tendies by next week.

Both can be true
The building and surrounding infrastructure can be outdated AND the chain could have exercised better discretion than to move their operations into it. They made a choice to lease it, A, and B chose not to pay for site upgrades out of their own pockets.
I’ve eaten here probably 100 times. Cane’s hits when it’s on point. However, any busy fast food site is going to beat up its site, particularly if you are selling chicken tendies to undergrads.
I ate there once
I ate there once, right after it opened. There was a big whoop de do, people lined up out the door, bunch of managers and sub-managers and regional manager dudes standing around in sherbet-colored shirts and ties with ecstatic expressions on their face. I got my tenders because I wanted to see what the big deal was. Conclusion: insipid, uninspired, nothing special, nothing that was not available at a dozen pizza joints with fryolators within half a mile. Never went back.
Smells like chicken.
Smells like chicken.
It's private property, not public
The city is only responsible for public property. The city does not own that building. The Trustees of Boston University does. But who is responsible for fixing the problem, the landlord or the tenant, depends on what is causing the problem. And apparently that hasn't been figured out yet.
Apparently, Raising Cane has decided on the "It's not us, it's them" excuse.
Dead rodent?
Could it be a dead rodent (or two) in a vent somewhere? That can cause an odor.
Down memory lane
When I lived at BU's West campus in 1980-82, that location housed what we called the World's Worst McDonalds. In two years I believe I only ate there once. It was always dirty and poorly staffed. Maybe that spot is just jinxed.
Or maybe chain fast food
Or maybe chain fast food restaurants are just gross.
Fond? memories
Ha. During that same period I was standing in line there when a worker in the kitchen dropped a bunch of chicken nuggets on the floor. After picking them up, he glanced around, and seeing me glaring at him, shot me a disdainful look and tossed them back into the heating tray to await distribution to unwary customers.
Over an oder?
They need to close South Station ASAP which smells like a urinal and a decaying foot!
The smell of sewer gas mixed with the fryolator
Mmmmmmm. It's Phartalicious.
When it is open, the place
When it is open, the place gets slammed after BU hockey games.
Raising Cain’s makes other
Raising Cain’s makes other fast food healthy by comparison.
