Police: Gang member points loaded gun at cops in Roxbury standoff, but puts gun down and runs away

Boston Police report arresting a Dorchester man Saturday after a foot chase that briefly turned into a standoff when he pointed a loaded gun at his pursuers before dropping it and running away - only to be caught thanks to a keen-nosed police dog.

Police say gang-unit officers on routine patrol spotted Jose Martinez, 21, "a known gang member" outside 4 Schuyler St. in Roxbury around 11:45 a.m. They got out of their car to have a little talk with him, but instead he started running away - while clutching his waist - police say.

The officers gave chase and followed the suspect into the rear of 274 Seaver Street where the suspect scaled a barbed wire topped chain link fence as the officers attempted to grab hold of him. The suspect made it over, landing on the other side, now face to face with the officers with the fence between them. At this time, the suspect took a firearm from his waistband and raised it towards the officers who immediately drew their weapons while ordering the suspect to drop the gun. The suspect dropped the firearm, a loaded Fegarmy Arms Model PA-63 9mm, on the ground and began to run again.

The officers then climbed over the fence and one began to chase Martinez while the other stayed behind to guard the gun, police say. Martinez managed to elude the officer but:

Boston Police K-9 “Kodi” and his handler responded to the scene and tracked the suspect to the rear of 4 Schuyler Street where officers located him hiding inside of a garage. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Martinez is now scheduled for arraignment tomorrow in Roxbury Municipal Court on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm on a public way, breaking and entering and trespassing.

Innocent, etc.

Pure bravery on the part of the officers.

First, chasing an armed guy. Most of the people reading this article could not even fathom doing that for a living.

Then, holding their fire when he pointed a gun at them. Very impressive that they held their own fire and managed to end things like they did.

Greatfully-
A Bostonian.

Good thing I got up late that morning, he apparently ran past my building, according to this post.
