Attack, ruckus at Pine Manor College

Brookline Police charge a couple of 19-year-olds tried to end an argument with a weapon in a Pine Manor College parking lot early yesterday morning:

Police spoke to one of the witnesses who said one of her friends and her former boyfriend had gotten into an argument in the parking lot that eventually led to the male physically sticking the female. The witness then explained that the suspect's accomplice displayed what appeared to be a gun. It was then reported that the victim and several others while in fear of being assaulted by a gun ran and were subsequently chased by the man and his friends. The suspect and his friend were arrested, and police were able to confiscate a knife, and a Marijuana pipe.

Both were charged with simple assault and battery and assault with a firearm. One of the two is listed as a student "mentor" at Mt. Ida College in Newton.

Also yesterday, an area man learned that if you lift a pair of headphones from the Coolidge Corner Radio Shack, you might want to wait more than 10 minutes to try to return it for cash.

What's going on with Pine Manor? It used to be Pine Mattress, where Harvard boys went to get a little. Now it's like Crime Central.

Pine Manor has undergone a series of demographic changes over the years. While the college used to be sort of a finishing school for not so bright rich girls looking for husbands, that constituency began to fade away during the 1970s and 1980s. (The not so bright rich girls have now joined the radical lesbians at Mount Holyoke, Smith and Wellesley as those schools try to keep their all female enrollments up). To stay alive, Pine Manor, which only required a pulse to get admitted anyway (corpses were admitted conditionally), began to enroll the "girls from the hood" to the point where the school is now about two thirds minority. Needless to say, these gals are not from the best areas nor the best high schools. Rumor has it that the school is in financial trouble, and some even say that its days are numbered.
