'The encroachment of decay' in Fields Corner

The Dorchester Reporter takes a tour of foreclosed properties in Fields Corner that are becoming neighborhood trash dumps - including 225 Westville St., from which an entire family of squatters was evicted this week. Most of the properties are owned by out-of-town banks, which don't seem to much care about cleanliness, but the Reporter also says neighbors had been complaining about 225 Westville for two months before the city finally did something. With a photo of the property and some details of just how gross the building had become.

Accredited Home Lenders Inc. is one of the neglectful owners, with a house at 216 Westville that is normally strewn with trash. It was cited this week by ISD as a result of this article.

I wish them luck. What's also galling is seeing the assessed (or should that be alleged?) property values - the now-familiar spike in 2001, straight up until last year. So many people who made money buying, selling, churning, and then folding or abandoning, at a huge cost to the neighborhood, tenants, etc.

Banks did not want to foreclose

Obviously the last thing the bank wants to own is this house.

"We used to call ISD more," said McLendon. "But when they come, they ticket from one end of the street to the other. There are people who are good neighbors on the street who might have something going on and they get ticketed. So now we're hesitant, except in extreme cases… For people who are poor already it makes their continued home ownership more perilous."

So obviously, the evil banks are not the only causes of "decay."
