Big Dig late-night report: Amorello worse than Ken Lay
Because nobody died on Lay's watch, Christine argues, suggesting that instead of a payment to make Amorello go away, the state should exile him to some remote Boston Harbor island.
Joe Dwinell tallies up the number of problem bolts - it's grown from 60 to 242.
One Boston visitor reports his anxiety in driving through the Ted Williams Tunnel today:
... I frequently glanced at the gigantic concrete ceiling tile that separate the top of the Ted Williams Tunnel from the bottom of Boston Harbor. When traffic slowed to a crawl and then to a stop when I was about a third of the way into the tunnel, I admit to anxiously holding my breath. ...
Spotlight Realty ponders whether the Big Dig problems will depress real-estate valules in South Boston and other areas where commuters would have to go through the tunnels:
... I wonder if buyers that were looking in a few different areas, will start to rule out areas where they would have to play russian roulet on their daily commute? ...
Julie: I'm afraid of my city:
... I only hope [del Valle's] death wakes these Big Dig jerk-offs up and encourages them to do things right the first time and quit cutting corners. In death, you ensure the safety of thousands of others. At least I hope.
Lino cannot believe the cowardice of elected paisanos:
I am normally proud of my Italian heritage, but these past few days I am ashamed of the cowardice of our elected officials (officials is too nice of a word for them today) in responding to the tunnel tragedy. Where is Traviglini, DeMasi, Menino, and company? ...
John Daley wonders where he can see the oath to serve until 2007 that Amorello says he took:
... Matt and his press conferences are the proverbial highway wreck; we know we should keep our eyes on the road ahead but we just can't stop looking. That's why it's important that he go away. Maybe then we can focus on the real culprits: the contractors, and the system that let them screw us. ...
Mats can't find the oath, but does find the standard oath of office prescribed by the state Constitution. Not surprisingly, it says nothing about how long of a term an authority chairman must serve.
Uncle used to drive the connector every day - it's what made it possible for him to live in Marblehead and work in Framingham. His 55-minute commute is now closer to two hours:
... This is not a moment to motivate me with speeches about the public interest. I want my frickin road back.

exile to island
the exile to island bit of my entry is where i liken Matt Amorello to Typhoid Mary... that's the distinction. Both insist they've done nothing wrong.
as for the bit I wrote about Ken Lay, i'm sure over the course of time depression, alcoholism, suicide etc... may range higher statistically amongst the people he ripped off. and in the end, time is the 3 ton concrete weight pressing down on their lives.
a friend of mine posted a comment in my entry that likens Matt Amorello to Mike Brown of FEMA during the Katrina disaster. I think that is an apt comparison.
