State Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz of Jamaica Plain today ended her campaign for governor, meaning Attorney General Maura Healey is basically now the Democratic candidate for governor in November (although technically there's still a primary), which means that, barring a meteor strike or coup or something, she will take office as governor in January.

Among the things the state legislature just hates to do is formally repeal laws that have been overturned by court rulings or newer laws. Rather than get stricken from the law books, these measures just sit there, dormant, for decades, mostly unnoticed except by the occasional historian or blogger. But a bill passed by the state Senate and now in the House would formally repeal a series of currently non-enforced laws that could suddenly be used to ban not just abortions and contraception in Massachusetts but even articles telling women where to get them, should Roe v. The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports the JP Neighborhood Council has formed a five-member bargaining committee to try to wrangle a "community benefits agreement" out of Whole Foods. The move comes after council members talked to local groups and politicians about the impending store - but not Chang-Diaz, who refused to talk to them. You may recall it was Chang-Diaz who first proposed Whole Foods help start an affordable-housing fund or stay out of JP.

And will city councilors Charles Yancey, Sam Yoon, Stephen Murphy, and John Connolly do likewise? You may recall they made a point of not endorsing anybody in the 2nd Suffolk state-senate race after their horse lost by a nose in September. Now that said horse has made them look like, at best, tools, you think they might make the best of a bad situation and endorse their fellow Democrat?
