Jed Hresko marveled at the time somebody put into clearing out a parking space for this bicycle on Columbus Avenue in the South End last night.
Columbus Avenue
Around 7:50 p.m. at Columbus Avenue and Centre Street, according to Stanley Staco.
Louis Gudema took in the Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival on Columbus Avenue in the South End today.
The Food Basket, 563 Columbus Ave., was held up around 4:15 p.m. by two bald black men, both in white T-shirts, both in their 30s and between 5'7" and 5'9", who got behind the counter and forced a clerk to open the cash register for them to pick clean.
UPDATE, Saturday, 3:30 p.m. Police report they've found the three people.
Boston Police report they are looking for three people in connection with the body of a woman, apparently in her 40s, found off Columbus Avenue on July 13.
Around 10:30 a.m.
KWAPT reports the truck had to be jacked up to get the person out.
UPDATE: Victim identified as Pippin Roe.
The wooded area between Highland Street and Columbus Avenue is taped off as a crime scene this evening as police investigate how a body wound up there.
Around 8 p.m. at Columbus Avenue and Amory Street, Stanley Staco reports, adding the person went into cardiac arrest in the ambulance. The Globe reports she died at the hospital.
Charlie Z., who took the photo around 9 this morning, wonders how you can flip a car on Columbus.
Jef Taylor, who has an eye for detail, wonders how the blue Prius behind turtle car got into that spot.
Jed Hresko forwards this photo of some extreme passive aggressiveness: Somebody peeved at a cardboard box in an alley off Columbus Avenue in the South End spent some serious time explaining how to properly recycle the box - by writing down the directions on two sides of the box itself, because, naturally, whoever put the box out there will come out frequently to admire his or her placement of the box (see the second side of complaining).
An offended citizen reports a punch to the sensibilities whenever he or she looks up at some new street signs in the South End:
The new Clearview signs in the South End look great in all-caps, but this one, like those at Appleton and Dartmouth, are jarring to the eyes and just don't look right. I hope the city will correct this for the visual good of the neighborhood.
The BRA informs us of the official ceremony at the site of the $300-million complex at Berkeley Street and Columbus Avenue.
Boston city councilors today generally backed a proposed city/state deal to grant Liberty Mutual 20 years' of tax breaks to build a new headquarters in the Back Bay, but said the insurer's CEO really should take his foot out of his mouth and stop comparing Boston to Venezuela (assuming the Herald quoted him accurately, which councilors Feeney and Linehan doubted). Residents, however, objected to giving a very profitable company money for building on a "blighted" property. The company itself said it has no plans to move out of Boston no matter what happens - but might not expand without the tax break.
Jed braved the elements to take this exclusive photo of, er, um, a non-snow-covered Columbus Avenue in the South End around noon.
UPDATE: Rapidly deteriorating conditions on the waterfront. And look at these near-whiteout conditions in Dorchester, captured at no small risk by Matt Vaitiskis:
Boston Police tweet there weren't any students on board a school bus that flipped around 7:30 a.m. at Columbus Avenue and New Heath Street.
Matthew Anderson snapped this shot of how quickly the brand-new Columbus Avenue bike lanes (installed just this past August) can disappear, thanks to some BWSC work.
Boston Police report three men wound up in the back seat of cruisers on gun-related charges after they broke simple traffic laws.
With its wide avenues and actual, dedicated bike lanes. Mike Ball returns from a trip there and is amazed at what you can do with real streets - but also what a little enforcement might do on our non-cow paths:
... I think of the new, narrow bike lanes painted for a short distance on Columbus Avenue here. Eleven days ago, I took it both ways. In that short distance, I counted 22 motor vehicles blocking the lane, 9 one way and 13 back. Of course, there was no enforcement. Bikes had to take the single lane in either direction from cars and trucks to move instead. ...
When Charlotte woke up this morning, she found a brand new bike lane down Columbus Avenue:
... Thank you Boston! It's beautiful. It's just what I always wanted!!!
