Victoria's Diner, which has been slinging hash at 1024 Massachusetts Ave. in Newmarket Square since 1949, has a new owner who says he plans to keep things mainly the way they are, just upgraded a bit and with 24-hour service every day and, if he can get it, a license to serve liquor until 1 a.m. Read more.

City Councilor Erin Murphy (at large) today declared a "public health crisis" being caused by having the same city street sweepers that brush up debris at Mass and Cass also go along the curb in the South End, Chinatown, Bay Village, Beacon Hill and Back Bay - an idea blasted as fearmongering by one of her colleagues. An heir to the Brookline Ice and Coal concern has filed plans with the BPDA to build a three-story "cannabis production and cultivation facility" on a "distressed" parcel owned by his family at 100 Hampden St., a couple blocks away from the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Melnea Cass Boulevard. An alleged Mass and Cass pimp was arraigned yesterday on human-trafficking charges and for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon for an incident in March in which he allegedly beat the woman he had been forcing to work for him for three years, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. A Boston Police officer who shot a man eight times on a deserted Newmarket Square street early on Feb. 22, 2019 was justified because the man had just shot the officer's partner twice after they woke him up and then tried to drive away, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office announced today. Gavin Schoch reports one man was found stabbed on Topeka Street while another was found stabbed by police following a blood trail to the Newmarket commuter-rail station, around 9:30 a.m.
