Newmarket Square could get live mariachi
The Zoning Board of Appeal this week approved a proposal by Casa Bonita, 1033 Massachusetts Ave., where the Hen House used to be, to add live mariachi music to its Mexican food.
The proposal still needs approval by the Mayor's Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing. It was before the zoning board because live music is a "conditional use" in that area - which means it is allowed, but needs a once-over by the board.
Casa Bonita initially plans to have live music on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights starting at 8 p.m., but could expand to weeknights if patrons just can't get enough mariachi, restaurant attorney Jennifer Allen said. The performances would be limited to the restaurant's 42-seat interior; no strolling guitarists on the seasonal patio.
Casa Bonita owner Felipe Duran initially asked for permission to have live performances up to 2 a.m., the restaurant's closing time, but the board voted to trim that to 1 a.m. Board Chairman Mark Erlich, however, voted against the proposal because even 1 a.m. "is a little late for me."

Creative use of that space
Hen House was unique. So would a Mariachi place. People seem to be creative in that spot.
At least it’s not a realtor, or bank branch. Or Froyo.
Ps - have personal training gyms become the new froyo? They seem to be everywhere now.
Good!
Anyone willing to do (legal) business down there should get everything they ask for from the city. Good luck to them.
Casa Bonita
The food is good too. It’s a nice place.
Casa Bonita, Casa Bonita,
Casa Bonita, Casa Bonita, food and fun in a festive atmosphere!
I am gonna check this place out
Thanks Adam for your stellar reporting once again!

Getting closer to becoming
Getting closer to becoming world class.
Thats a good way
This is a good way to help the mass and cass situation.
I know when I am at Tijuana's here in town and the Marachi band is playing. I know I need to quicky eat and get outta there before I get blasted out by the band next to my table.
Same with Mass and Cass.. just get the band to walk down there a few times a day. People will just leave. Might be easier than outreach.
Just tell the band if they see someone shooting up to walk right over and start playing loudy. Bring a outreach person with them and I bet the person shooting up would go running to the outreach person begging them treatment just to get them away from the band.
(ok ok I am joking here.. I tell ya tho, the marachi band is the fast way to get rid of me. I just want to sit N eat, not have some band in my ear every few minutes)
For the really hardcore,
For the really hardcore,
you could add a bagpipe band.
Looking forward to trying Casa Bonita
Better yet

Music as deterrent
You are joking, but you are not entirely off the mark. The reason they blast classical music from the Corner Mall in Downtown Crossing is to keep away the bad element that tends to gather there. It basically works.
I actually like bagpipes if
I actually like bagpipes if they 1.) play the right music, 2.) in the right place.
I too am a fan.
But then again I enjoy military drum corps as well.

College drumlines are okay as well.
It's not about you, Mark
Ok, great, no one's asking you to stay out that late then. How about giving an actual reason to oppose this?
