I've got to hand it to the Boston DPW - they did an excellent job keeping our Roslindale street plowed and sanded (a salt/sand truck even came by again around 8 a.m.). Up in Allston, however, Harry Mattison provides photographic proof that the city didn't do such a hot job. What about where you are?

Would it surprise you to learn that the MBTA didn't do a very good job clearing away Green Line platforms?

All you far-western suburban types with your inches of fluffy snow to play in! Feh! Here in the Hub of the Universe, when I went to sleep last night, there were rivers of water streaming down our street and pools of the liquid in front of our house.

Forget the Eskimos - it's Boston weatherpeople who have at least 100 different terms for stuff falling out of the sky in the winter. Margalit reports learning a whole new word while watching the weathercasts this morning - sneet:

Lisa Williams goes to her local Target in search of some seasonal kids' attire and discovers:

Shorts! Pants that do not proceed all the way to the ankles! The shoe aisle features sandals. There are bathing suits everywhere!

IT'S FEBRUARY! IN MASSACHUSETTS! IT IS VERY, VERY COLD HERE! ...

She notes that Target is headquartered in Minnesota, which suggests they are at least somewhat familiar with the concept of "winter."

Bundled-up Krissy reports from 8-degree Newton:

... I just saw a girl crossing the street West Newton Square wearing a knee length skirt (it didn’t look like there was pantyhose), ballet flats, no hats, no scarf, no gloves, and her jacket wasn’t even zipped up. ...

Boston Police report the snow came in handy last night when officers responded to a Sudan Street address where a woman had been punched and kicked:

A description of the suspects was broadcasted and officers noticed a set of fresh footprints leading from the scene. These were the only sets of footprints on the ground in the fresh snow covered ground.

The tracks led police to two alleged young punks (14 and 15), who were arrested on a variety of charges. The victim declined medical treatment.

Jason, who lives in South Boston, declares war:

... After yesterday's dusting, should I see any chairs, garbage cans, children's kitchen play sets, or (my favorite) walkers marking any Southie parking spots this morning, I am going to hurl said items into Dorchester Bay in my show of protesting the Southie mentality of "any amount of accumulated snow" equals "don't touch my parking spot!"

Ed. note: I spotted my first Roslindale garbage-can space holder last week.

Alyssa and Deeps drive home in last night's snow:

... Deeps: Besides, these people are just getting their stupid on.

Me: What?

Deeps: See, they forgot what winter is like so today is the first day that they can get their winter stupid on.

I started to laugh, but found a gasp instead as a guy ran a light and nearly sideswiped us.

Deeps: Classic winter stupid, that's what you have there. ...

Steve writes it makes his investment in a new furnace and windows worth it:

... I thought I would have to sue Al Gore for a while there.

We'll take The Missus's word for what it was like at 5:15 this morning:

Trust me, you don't want to know what it's like walking a mile and a half in the cold, dark streets of the South End, Theater District and Chinatown. ...

Time to uncover the pool, Marge!

At the Hyde Park Savings Bank on Centre Street in West Roxbury at 10 this morning. The thermometer at The Cooperative Bank across the street only read 63 degrees, but it sure felt like 64.

The lagoon in the Public Garden is completely frozen. Last night, I took some pictures that I'm really pleased with.
