The Zoning Board of Appeal yesterday approved a billboard company's plan to replace the rusted old billboards down the hill from the Madonna Queen of the Universe Shrine on Rte. 1A in East Boston with a double-sided electronic signboard, after hearing from residents and elected officials that the plan would remove a local eyesore and help fund the religious order that owns the property. Live Boston reports on the 3 a.m. crash on Rte. 1A. The tanker driver was able to escape the resulting fire unharmed; the car driver was trapped until Boston firefighters arrived and got her out.

A billboard company that has a deal with the Sons of Divine Providence to replace its current old-fashioned billboards outside the Madonna Queen of the Universe Shrine on Rte. 1A in East Boston with a single, larger electronic signboard yesterday sued the Zoning Board of Appeals, which twice rejected the proposal earlier this year. The Zoning Board of Appeal today approved plans by developers for two new residential buildings, with a total of 29 units, to replace what is now a flooring concern, along Curtis and Saratoga streets in East Boston. Read more.

The Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled today prosecutors can't use the cocaine found in a man's car as evidence against him because the state trooper who initially stopped the man just off Rte. 1A in Lynn spent way too long asking him questions that had nothing to do with his failure to signal for a left turn. State Police report the driver of a tractor trailer who tried turning left at Bennington Street and Neptune Road under Rte. 1A learned to better read caution signs this morning, although his lesson "impacted traffic significantly in the area."

Word reaches the UHub listening station that, with approval from the Boston Licensing Board, the Starbucks on Rte. 1A south in East Boston will start 24-hour drive-thru service on Monday.

A Swampscott man faces two counts each of manslaughter and OUI motor-vehicle homicide for an August crash just outside Logan Airport, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Stuck truck in East Boston

The driver of an 18-wheeler disregarded or didn't see the signs banning big rigs from left turns at Bennington and Neptune around 6:30 a.m. and got stuck under 1A, just in time to jam up the morning rush hour.
