South Boston to get chocolate cafe; Mission Hill to get fresh pasta takeout
The Boston Licensing Board said today it will likely approve a food permit for Blue Marble Chocolate Cafe, 258 W. Broadway in South Boston, where owner Jennifer Turner plans to serve coffee, tea and "chocolate dessert-type products."
However, board Chairman Daniel Pokaski said he would likely vote at a meeting tomorrow to defer any action until after Turner meets with neighbors. Board member Michael Connolly said he didn't even think that was necessary. Representatives from the mayor's office and city councilors Bill Linehan and Steve Murphy gave conditional approval, pending a neighborhood meeting.
Meanwhile, the board looked similarly in favor on a proposal by Barryson, Inc. to open Lilly's Gourmet Express Pasta at 1526-1528 Tremont St. on Mission Hill.
"I don't know who opposes gourmet pasta, but certainly not the mayor's office," a representative from the mayor's office told the board.

LOL, for some reason this strikes me as funny.
From the site: Say it in chocolate. Do you want to surprise someone with a special message? We can spell it out with chocolate letters and package it nicely in one of our elegant candy boxes. Choose from white, milk, or dark chocolate.
I'm not sure W. Broadway needs another coffee place where you can get a sweet too. There is already Cafe Arpeggio, Sofia's Cafe, Sweet Tooth...
Least something’s finally
Least something’s finally going in and opening.
It's been an empty store front for years, and looked like it was just being used as storage for the landlord. It was either this, or a similar dilapidated store front that held a party in it's location on St. Paddys day last year. The next day there were empties in the windowsill and the place was trashed.
uh oh
Gourmet "Express" food? Will hours of operation extend past 11pm Thurs-Sat? Mike Ross will not be happy that another eating establishment will cater to the interests of hungry, lazy, night-wandering, beer drinking, taxpayers of Mission Hill, college students.
However, all speculation.
Pokaski shines again
However, board Chairman Daniel Pokaski said he would likely vote at a meeting tomorrow to defer any action until after [the restaurant owner] meets with neighbors.
Yes, there's nothing better for small business development than inserting random, unnecessary delays in the licensing process. The neighbors will have to grapple with the devastating impact that the opening of a small coffee shop in pre-existing vacant retail space will have on their property values.
Blue Marble
I'm a life long resident. This sounds like a good idea. Wait till these people get a chance to meet the clientele at 'Whitey's Place'!
