Mosquito project to spray parts of West Roxbury, Hyde Park and Roslindale next week

The Suffolk County Mosquito Control Project says it will have trucks spraying parts of West Roxbury on Monday and Tuesday nights and parts of Hyde Park and Roslindale on Wednesday night.

On Monday in West Roxbury, the sprayed areas will be along the VFW Parkway, between Russet Road and Gardner Street, including streets near Garnet Road, Maple Street, Vermont Street, Lasell Road, Brook Farm Road, Carroll Street and Chesbrough Road. On Tuesday, spraying will be done in near Spring Street, Laurie Avenue, Northdale Road, Johnson Street, Centre Terrace, Stimson Street and Grove Street.

On Wednesday, along the Hyde Park/Roslindale line, the areas to be sprayed include Dale Street, Deforest Street, Austin Street, Gordon Avenue and Reservation Road.

You can see maps of the areas planned for spraying on the project's Web site.

The Project uses a spray formulation containing the pesticide, sumithrin, to control mosquitoes. Sumithrin is a synthetic pyrethroid that is classified as slightly toxic by the EPA. Mosquito control applications of sumithrin do not pose a significant risk to people or their pets due to the low toxicity of sumithrin and the small amount used to control mosquitoes. As with any pesticide, people should minimize exposure. If residents see a spray truck approaching, they are advised to go indoors for a couple of minutes while the spray dissipates. Residents are also advised to close windows facing the street. Beekeepers do not need to take any special precautions since spraying begins after dusk.

Based on some of the lunatic threads posted on nextdoor.com for my "micro-hood" I'm gonna batten down the hatches for an epic "shitstorm of the uninformed" over this -- and you just KNOW that someone is gonna go all Alex Jones and blame Obama, HAARP and the chemtrail people for smogging our streets with their gaymaking mind control gas

If they are doing this as they have in the past, the spraying truck sounds like a giant diesel with no muffler. You can hear it for blocks. So when you hear that sucker coming, close the windows and you're all set.

I appreciate that they do this spraying. I hate having to hide from the bugs. A couple years back I had a dead crow that tested positive for West Nile, so the potential risk from mosquitoes is real to me.

When I was a kid in the 1970's we called the guy with the bug spray truck "Smokey Joe" and every kid would come running out of their house as soon as we heard the familiar sound ....to chase the truck up the street, breathing in the toxic fumes. We had no idea...

good times :)
