The Dorchester Reporter reports talks between UMass Boston and the Kraft family to build a Revs stadium on the water have ended 0-0 and now UMass is going to look at what else they can build where the Bayside Expo Center used to be.

I, for one, am shocked that another "stadium is coming plz buy season tickets" news article resulted in "we couldn't work things out"

I mean it. Great work by the South Boston / Dorchester political crew. The soccer stadium was a smokescreen for a new concert venue. A 20,000 seat venue would have been hell for the Savin Hill and Columbia neighborhoods in terms of noise. Yes, there would have been 19 to 22 soccer games per year but 20,000 seats would also be the perfect fit for concert capacity between Great Woods / Xfinity and Fenway.

Let's all be careful what one of the country's richest man wants. Funny how he didn't propose to do this in Chestnut Hill / Newton. There's good highway access and T stops there too and land could be had for a price.

I love soccer but if you look at the Revs payroll (I heard they could have gotten Robbie Keane but passed and took on the Sean Avery / Ron Artest of US Soccer; Jermaine Jones), they are not exactly playing for the win with the team.

We are going to get a lot of whining from the Midnite Riders about wanting an urban soccer stadium so they can all pretend they are at San Siro or Camp Nou while watching the equivalent of AA footie.

Instead we may get sensible development for academic and housing in an area that needs it.

How much did the price of Wonderland just go up today?

Right on. Couldn't have been said better.

So I can agree to most of this, but seriously, Rt 9 is not "good highway access" Not even remotely close. Getting to that area from anywhere north or south of the city is a disaster.

I can't speak to your points about concerts, noise levels in Savin, etc., because I am not someone who pretends to know about things that I don't, but comparing Jermaine Jones to Ron Artest? "Not playing for the win with the team"?

You don't love soccer that much if your knowledge of Jones is that baseless and stupid, you also don't love soccer if you are dogging the local supporters group that works very hard in our community to grow the game, those are things people who love soccer appreciate and respect.

Cost the US the game. Also, the antics extra time in the playoffs in 2015 against DC. Is that enough? I was going to compare him to Little Ball of Hate, but at least he scores more often.

Also, you don't have to dress up as Nerd Revere and blow horns to prove you love soccer in this town. You look like a bunch of idiots in the end zone. What's it today, a shout along against the 23 Sounders fans that showed up? The game is on the field. I have friends who played soccer in college and they just shake their head watching you guys.

Players get red cards in big games, Beckham's reckless red card in the '98 World Cup cost England the tournament, Zidane in '06 cost France... does that make them comparable to Metta World Peace?

What about Jones' wonder goal vs. Portugal in the 2014 World Cup that kept the US alive? Or his composure and work rate that entire tournament?

I can only think of a few soccer players you can legit compare to a Ron Artest type... Joey Barton, Mario Balotelli, and if you go back a ways the likes of Roy Keane & Vinnie Jones (Bullet Tooth Tony from "Snatch")

Again with the supporters group, those "idiots" make it possible for supporters who maybe couldn't normally get to Gillette (no car, no commuter rail service to Revs games), possible with their charter buses. I joined them for one to a US game in CT a few years back and had a blast, so I couldn't disagree more with your attitude towards them.

I love soccer so I watch Premier League, Bundesliga, Champions League, etc... and I watch my kids play. I don't watch MLS for the same reason I don't watch Lowell Spinners games. MLS is a cabal set up by the owners for the owners, not for the love of the game. The lack of promotion relegation and the fact that all the money in MLS is in selling expansion rights is all you need to know about MLS.

Right, so a few concerts a year would be given for free to Savin Hill...but let's not put the stadium on the water where 3/4 of its border are surrounded by Moakley and water and a highway....
Hmm, where else can we put it? I know! Anywhere else in the city where it will be 100% surrounded by people!

I mean where do you think you can put an outdoor stadium in the city that would have been on public transit, pretty accessible by car, walking distance to soccer-loving communities, a location that wouldn't require a lot of redevelopment because of what was already there, would have probably connected that part of the waterfront with the rest of the city more than it is today in people's minds, and isolated from nearly all dense residence space?

Talk about sacrificing the many for the few.

They could have been got for the right price, are close to or on highway and transit infrastructure, but remember, Kraft wouldn't own it or at least not own enough of the revenue. That is the most important part of the equation. Nickerson could have been modified. Hell, Harvard is going to take 50 years to build out Brighton Yards supposedly, a 20 year lease could not have been done there?

As far as talk about soccer loving communities, I assume also included in there a few of our Central American friends? You know the ones that are scared right now because the guy who Kraft gave $1M to for his inauguration is sending the goon squad around to round up them and their neighbors? I'm sure they are as pleased as punch right now about going to a Revs game.

Watching Chivas vs. Club America on UniMas is a much safer option for them right now unfortunately.

Nickerson? That's BU's field. They use it. It's not for sale.
Harvard Stadium...is used by Harvard. It's not for sale either.

Kraft wants to own a stadium not lease a university's in its spare time. How many MLS teams play in university stadia on the cheap? Two...and they're only there until their stadia are finished (one this fall, the other next year). Moving *into* a university's stadium is exactly the wrong direction to develop the franchise.

PS - leave your bullshit national politics baggage at the door please, thanks.

I don't love the huge parking lots and chain stores but otherwise Assembly Row has a lot going for it. Massive mixed use spaces with residences, restaurants, stores, office buildings, and mass transit. Far better use of the space then the IKEA would have been.

up
Voting closed 0

Assembly Row is horrible! Tons of traffic, expensive cars driven by guys wanting to show off their wheels whizzing down narrow streets which would be better served as pedestrian and bike only zones. Overpriced stores which have little inventory and are mainly filled by people hanging around. The restaurant scene is okay at best, but again, sitting outside to eat you're surrounded by SUV traffic and pollution.

up
Voting closed 0

Not going to disagree about the overpriced stores, but when I was there Sunday the place is packed. And this is close to two years after it became active. So they are doing something right.

up
Voting closed 0

Your other two options for the outlets are to drive to Wrentham or Merrimack, NH. Those are always packed as well. Also, Assembly is T-accessible.

Allowing cars on all the streets at Assembly was a dumb mistake. With that many pedestrians around its insanely dangerous to allow cars. And who wants to eat on a sidewalk patio when there are cars constantly whizzing by 3 feet from your face? But drivers are lazy and can't be bothered to walk for 30 seconds to a parking garage(let alone the subway stop), so everyone else suffers.

up
Voting closed 0

Still construction there.

But, yeah, evenings and weekends ... should be humans access only.

No excuses for not walking and putting the cars away - people use the paths to get to the Orange Line with their wheelchairs, and it's all set up for non motorized access.

"With that many pedestrians around its insanely dangerous to allow cars"

Not if pedestrians stay on the sidewalk and cars stay on the street.

"And who wants to eat on a sidewalk patio when there are cars constantly whizzing by 3 feet from your face?"

Well, anyone who eats on a sidewalk patio in a major city.

Cars second.

You clearly have NO IDEA what you are talking about. Humans are so numerous that there is no space for cars, and entitled drivers like you then start getting huffy that nobody is worshiping their metal cage and bowing down to kiss their arse.

The sidewalks are not large enough for the number of humans. Therefore, CARS are GUESTS at best and really should just go somewhere else and feel special.

up
Voting closed 0

I've never had an issue at Assembly with crowded sidewalks. Geeez, I wonder who is driving those cars..... could it be.. HUMANS? People walk on sidewalks and cross at crosswalks, cars drive on the street, not that difficult a concept.

up
Voting closed 0

There are these things called crosswalks. Ever heard of them?

These are where Special Bunnies in Cars think they can bully Humans.

People on sidewalks use crosswalks, and Special Bunnies like YOU need to suck it up and stop and wait for HUNDREDS of humans to pass your Special Bunny Mobile which gives you no special rights to move.

transit-oriented development, it's interesting to note how many oversized parking garages Assembly Row has.

I don't understand what's wrong with Foxboro Stadium. I commute into Boston 5x a week, real soccer fans should
Be able to commute to Foxboro for occasional home games, or
maybe there aren't enough local fans to support a team. The Patriots have no trouble drawing fans from all over New England (and metro Boston) to Foxboro.

Commute how? I don't drive or own a car. How do I get there?

You ride the fan buses that take you from Boston to the stadium?

up
Voting closed 0

Ummm... you have heard of Uber and Lyft, right? Rent a car and split the cost with a group of friends is another good option.

up
Voting closed 0

$200 bucks each way plus tips seems a BIT excessive for a game versus a subway fare or local ride.

up
Voting closed 0

Uhhh, it's $42-56 from Beacon Hill, $3 less from South Boston for UberX. As suggested, you split it with friends.

Or you can take a shuttle for $30

Oh, and you know that parking at Gillette isn't free, right?

Yes, if you want to go to an event at a stadium and/or arena you have to: pay for your own transportation, pay to park your car if you choose to drive. Am I missing something? Do you expect someone else to pay for you to go to a soccer game, football game, concert?

The T runs trains from Providence and South Station to the stadium for Pats games. But the last time I looked they don't run it for Revolution games or concerts.

The same way everyone else does, this is your problem, not anyone else's.

According to state police the top 2 spots for drunk driving in MA are Gillette Stadium at #2 and I Love This Bar at Gillette Stadium at #1. As if we needed another reason to hate country music.

The MBTA runs a train for the Patriots, it does not for the Revs on most days. This is one of the least informed opinions one could possible have on this matter.

But if we're gonna get a starchitect, how about Zumthor? We already have a Gehry.

Not sure how it all works, but I surely hope that Umass Boston can come up with some creative solution and possibly use its large land assets to fix some of its financial woes. Reselling a good chunk of the land it at a much higher price than they paid for it a few years ago would seem like an option worth exploring. Provided that they don't cover the majority of it with ghastly parking lots and use land more efficiently, that school still has plenty of space to expand.

Selling to Kraft when the market is out off control makes the most sense. We've just sat through a month of stories about how UMB is drowning in debt because of over-expansion. There has to be a price that makes a sale worthwhile for the State, but of course people would still cry about how the rich man is robbing them. Then they will just insist that the Gov't just pull more money out of thin air.

Kind of like turning 150m because of a shadow, then turning around and demanding to know what the Plan B is to get that same money for nothing. I know you guys all have great ideas for new taxes but the reality is you couldn't even change the gas tax.

In the world of soccer, thats: nil-nil.

Note that this isn't the first time Kraft has attempted to use public property or public funds to benefit himself.

Remember this?

The article also states donations were made to certain politicians and the state Democratic party while the project was under state review...

The Revolution will never leave Foxborough. The team is merely is a date filler at Gillette Stadium, and Boston, god's gift to sports, is a dead-ass MLS town compared to, of all places, Atlanta.
