The Dorchester Reporter reports talks between UMass Boston and the Kraft family to build a Revs stadium on the water have ended 0-0 and now UMass is going to look at what else they can build where the Bayside Expo Center used to be.

Great Work!
I mean it. Great work by the South Boston / Dorchester political crew. The soccer stadium was a smokescreen for a new concert venue. A 20,000 seat venue would have been hell for the Savin Hill and Columbia neighborhoods in terms of noise. Yes, there would have been 19 to 22 soccer games per year but 20,000 seats would also be the perfect fit for concert capacity between Great Woods / Xfinity and Fenway.
Let's all be careful what one of the country's richest man wants. Funny how he didn't propose to do this in Chestnut Hill / Newton. There's good highway access and T stops there too and land could be had for a price.
I love soccer but if you look at the Revs payroll (I heard they could have gotten Robbie Keane but passed and took on the Sean Avery / Ron Artest of US Soccer; Jermaine Jones), they are not exactly playing for the win with the team.
We are going to get a lot of whining from the Midnite Riders about wanting an urban soccer stadium so they can all pretend they are at San Siro or Camp Nou while watching the equivalent of AA footie.
Instead we may get sensible development for academic and housing in an area that needs it.

I can't speak to your points about concerts, noise levels in Savin, etc., because I am not someone who pretends to know about things that I don't, but comparing Jermaine Jones to Ron Artest? "Not playing for the win with the team"?
You don't love soccer that much if your knowledge of Jones is that baseless and stupid, you also don't love soccer if you are dogging the local supporters group that works very hard in our community to grow the game, those are things people who love soccer appreciate and respect.

Cost the US the game. Also, the antics extra time in the playoffs in 2015 against DC. Is that enough? I was going to compare him to Little Ball of Hate, but at least he scores more often.

Again with the supporters group, those "idiots" make it possible for supporters who maybe couldn't normally get to Gillette (no car, no commuter rail service to Revs games), possible with their charter buses. I joined them for one to a US game in CT a few years back and had a blast, so I couldn't disagree more with your attitude towards them.

I love soccer so I watch Premier League, Bundesliga, Champions League, etc... and I watch my kids play. I don't watch MLS for the same reason I don't watch Lowell Spinners games. MLS is a cabal set up by the owners for the owners, not for the love of the game. The lack of promotion relegation and the fact that all the money in MLS is in selling expansion rights is all you need to know about MLS.

Hmm, where else can we put it? I know! Anywhere else in the city where it will be 100% surrounded by people!
I mean where do you think you can put an outdoor stadium in the city that would have been on public transit, pretty accessible by car, walking distance to soccer-loving communities, a location that wouldn't require a lot of redevelopment because of what was already there, would have probably connected that part of the waterfront with the rest of the city more than it is today in people's minds, and isolated from nearly all dense residence space?
Talk about sacrificing the many for the few.

They could have been got for the right price, are close to or on highway and transit infrastructure, but remember, Kraft wouldn't own it or at least not own enough of the revenue. That is the most important part of the equation. Nickerson could have been modified. Hell, Harvard is going to take 50 years to build out Brighton Yards supposedly, a 20 year lease could not have been done there?
As far as talk about soccer loving communities, I assume also included in there a few of our Central American friends? You know the ones that are scared right now because the guy who Kraft gave $1M to for his inauguration is sending the goon squad around to round up them and their neighbors? I'm sure they are as pleased as punch right now about going to a Revs game.
Watching Chivas vs. Club America on UniMas is a much safer option for them right now unfortunately.

Kraft wants to own a stadium not lease a university's in its spare time. How many MLS teams play in university stadia on the cheap? Two...and they're only there until their stadia are finished (one this fall, the other next year). Moving *into* a university's stadium is exactly the wrong direction to develop the franchise.

I don't love the huge parking lots and chain stores but otherwise Assembly Row has a lot going for it. Massive mixed use spaces with residences, restaurants, stores, office buildings, and mass transit. Far better use of the space then the IKEA would have been.

Assembly Row is horrible! Tons of traffic, expensive cars driven by guys wanting to show off their wheels whizzing down narrow streets which would be better served as pedestrian and bike only zones. Overpriced stores which have little inventory and are mainly filled by people hanging around. The restaurant scene is okay at best, but again, sitting outside to eat you're surrounded by SUV traffic and pollution.

And who wants to eat on a sidewalk patio when there are cars constantly whizzing by 3 feet from your face? Not sure how it all works, but I surely hope that Umass Boston can come up with some creative solution and possibly use its large land assets to fix some of its financial woes. Reselling a good chunk of the land it at a much higher price than they paid for it a few years ago would seem like an option worth exploring. Provided that they don't cover the majority of it with ghastly parking lots and use land more efficiently, that school still has plenty of space to expand.
From a pure financial view
Selling to Kraft when the market is out off control makes the most sense. We've just sat through a month of stories about how UMB is drowning in debt because of over-expansion. There has to be a price that makes a sale worthwhile for the State, but of course people would still cry about how the rich man is robbing them. Then they will just insist that the Gov't just pull more money out of thin air.
Kind of like turning 150m because of a shadow, then turning around and demanding to know what the Plan B is to get that same money for nothing. I know you guys all have great ideas for new taxes but the reality is you couldn't even change the gas tax.
