State Police report a Roslindale man whose engine was overheating as he drove south on 128 near Highland Avenue around 10 p.m. on Friday pulled into the breakdown lane and got out of the car - only to be hit by another vehicle, the driver of which then just kept on going.
The victim, 22, was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, State Police say.

Safer with Lighting
For some reason every street has lighting except highways.
Headlights only effectively reach 150'...That's 1.5 seconds at 65 MPH. Reflective lane markers and signage give the illusion of visibility and are effective for way-finding. But if there's something on the road like an object, pothole, animal or person, that something won't be visible until it's too late to avoid it. The traffic volume on 128 certainly warrants lighting.
I hope the victim pulls thru this.
if only there were the technology...
If only we had the technology to light the road in front of every vehicle.
We could call them "head" "lights."
Bonus: on busy roads, other people's headlights in front of you, would light things in front of them, that you could see, too!
The victim was in the breakdown lane, where the driver who struck them should never have been in the first place. That's not a lighting issue, that's a "not staying in your lane" issue, and highway lanes are VERY big.
Also, I find that on the highway I have no issues seeing stopped cars and moving over a lane way, way in advance, even if they don't have any lights on, unless it is raining, hard. If you're not scanning the highway hundreds of yards in front of you, you're not driving correctly.
Furthermore: all cars have reflective tail lights and the victim probably had on at least tail lights, probably emergency flashers too.
Last but not least: even if the driver "didn't see them", they were required by law to stop, and they didn't.
So enough with the excuses for someone who was driving dangerously and then left the scene of a crash with injuries.
Are you for real ? Not nearly
Are you for real ? Not nearly all secondary roads have lighting, and if you can only see what you are within 1.5 seconds of colliding with then you had better be wearing a chute and driving a vehicle that has an ejection seat. On the other hand, it's perversely gratifying to be reminded that scumbag massholes will just as readily defend crimes committed by drivers against their fellow drivers as they will crimes committed by drivers against non-drivers.
GOD HELP US
May GOD's mercies amd power heal, mend and protect this young man as he fights for his life.
May the person who struck this young man, PLEASE turn yourself in.
I was driving this section of
I was driving this section of 128 last night, and wondered why there is no true breakdown lane. The cars that drive in this lane FLY. Bad design. I'm surprised we don't have more accidents like this.
I hope this young man recovers quickly from his injuries.
There is a reason
They are rebuilding this stretch of highway. It's the last bit of the work going down to Route 24 that feels like has been going on for decades.
I drove it
Maybe three weeks ago during the day. Horror show. When it's over, I think they're going to rebuild the 128/95 exchange.
So don't put down the xanax just yet...
Back when I had access to the
Back when I had access to the Globe archives, there was an article from '79 or '80 that indicated that the 128 widening project was supposed to be completed by 1984. I got my first full time job after college in 1984 and have been commuting in the 128 breakdown lane for most of the time since.
Breakdown Lanes extremely dangerous
I hope the young man recovers. That said, BDL's are extremely dangerous, especially if you're out of the car, even worse at night. I'm not sure if he could have made the exit but it's always safer off the highway. Even troopers with all of their emergency lights going are constantly getting hit in the BDL.
