Former City Councilor Tito Jackson falls ill, tests positive for coronavirus
Even as US Rep. Ayanna Pressley was reporting negative results on a Covid-19 test, former Roxbury councilor Tito Jackson was reporting he tested positive. And he has some advice:
Stay your ass at home! This virus is no damn joke. If you don't sit down, it will sit you down, lay you out or even take you out.
Jackson reports he began feeling ill on March 14, when he developed a sore throat and cough:
So if you have been in physical contact with me in that period of time, please consider yourself exposed.
Sadly, I attended a Birthday gathering with about 6-7 folks (all who I had to call and let them know I exposed them, which was hard but so important to do). That evening, I started to have a bad headache and then began to sweat throughout the night. The following Monday, I began to have the worst body aches EVER in my life with all my muscles throbbing with pain. I had shooting pain in my ankles and knees. I also had horrible back pain under my shoulder blades that felt so bad (no I know it was probably radiating pain from my lung inflammation). The last couple days has been pretty good with only a slight cough and the worst is over although, I am quarantined for another 2 weeks to be safe.
Jackson has another word of advice:
All People, including Black people do get Corona and we die from it too, so don't believe the hype.
Corona Viruses don't discriminate. Corona wants to take all of us out. Corona wants all of us, it doesn't profile, it seeks to wreak havoc, illness and harm on all who it can reach.
Black people suffer from the highest rates of all the most significant health issues from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer. We have take this illness seriously or it will take our lives at a serious rate.

Dude, really? A former public official isn't getting the memo?
Sounds like it was March 14th.....
Although it isn't really clear from his post.
How does that make it better?
How does that make it better?
If I recall.....
Things got real serious on the evening of 3/11. But even then I don't think people got the extent of the entire thing. I sure as hell was taking it seriously but I'm never going to publicly shame anyone for doing anything before 3/16. I think some schools were even open that day.
The region needs some more
The region needs some more social shaming as shown by today's article about the parks.
You were in a bunker on the
You were in a bunker on the 14th?
People were cautious but nobody was advocating our current isolated situation.
Yes we should be shaming people who are not socially distancing right now because we all know that's not ok right now.
In a bunker? Nope.
In a bunker? Nope.
Socializing when the threat was now common knowledge? Also nope.
I began isolation on March 5th,
including taking the kid out of preschool. And I started working from home on Feb 28, ahead of my company. It was pretty clear back then, if you were at all following the news.
(If you were waiting for the government to say something, or were reliant on your employer to give the signal, it was a different story.)
I'm an essential employee so
I'm an essential employee so I'm still working and have to be on site on occasion...
I get what you are saying. I haven't shaken hands or done any of that for months. I started avoiding my parents and family around the end of February . I was the guy at work telling people to sing while washing their hands.
I'm very cautious but while you two may have been wrapped in bubbles since the 5th 90 percent of the population was still ok with small gatherings at that time.
I see this like I see the March on Selma, Woodstock and Stonewall. While some people did attend those events , 100 times as many people claim they were there.
Yeah, agreed that what he did
Yeah, agreed that what he did was (unfortunately) not out of line with the general population.
Just STOP
I had elective surgery on March 6. I went to an organized event on March 5, right after I went to work that day in a dense cubicle farm. It was another TEN DAYS before that space was shut down and people dispersed.
The typical incubation period is 5 to 14 days (and the range is up to 21 days). If he fell ill on the 14th, he was likely infected early in March and possibly in February.
There were no warnings or shut downs yet - just hand washing, cough covering, etc. Stuff you should do anyway.
Go put together a timeline, learn a few basics about public health, or quit hanging a mask of judgemental nonsense onto everything and everyone. You are not fooling anyone but yourself if you think that it covers your ignorance, panic and fear.
If he fell ill on the 14th,
If he fell ill on the 14th, he was likely infected early in March and possibly in February.
Indeed. Many of the cases we are seeing now we're spread by people like the councilor who chose not to follow best practices.
No warnings on the 14th? Don't lie because you like the guys politics.
I work in public health
I was on leave but the office I work in did not shut until March 17.
It was open March 16 with all the people there, four cubes to a 12x12 area across eight floors.
Social distance warnings hit at/around that time, honey. Even then it sounds like his gathering had well fewer than the 10 people stated at that time.
My son works in food service and his work did not shut down until last weekend.
Know anyone who has had this, either? It generally hits HARD and all at once - you can go to work feeling fine and get nuked at mid-day or evening. You can literally not know you are sick, go someplace as normal, and then suddenly realize that you are in trouble.
But, hey, show us all how you can use judgemental nonsense and blame games and extroverted paranoia to handle your own sense of panic over a situation. I'm sure the virus is listening to all your braying about border closings and such and will be impressed.
Exactly .. I've been
Exactly .. I've been following this thing daily since it was just in China. Each milestone, what days they were and when they landed. Eating dinner with friends when Tito did it was not out of the ordinary.
On March 20th I posted a picture from the Pru Skywalk on Twitter this page retweeted and I heard no complaints. Although within the room I followed social distancing ( I was an early adopter). On March 21st I posted a picture from Revere Beach that was also covered here... No comments.
People need to put down the torches already. Tito was under no obligation to out himself to the public at large but he did so to try show those who are not taking it seriously even those under 60 can get knocked off their feet.
It was March 14th...
That was right at the time when we were switching from elbow taps to close the bars, before a 6' social distance was the dominant view.
On the 15th those that
On the 15th those that crowded the bars were being universally looked down upon by those with half a brain. That is a garbage excuse.
Only 6-7 people though
This wasn't some 30+ person affair at a bar or restaurant.
I'm not sure that matters?
I get that spreading to 6-7 people isn't as bad as spreading to 30+ people, but what I'm concerned about is the rationale. I keep hearing about people who are getting together with "close friends", in-laws, etc. I have a friend whose "bubble" consists of 1)her and her husband in their house 2)her daughter, who was visiting her boyfriend in North Carolina and came home maybe a week and a half ago 2)her other daughter, her other daughter's husband and their two kids, who live across town. I have a coworker who went to visit another coworker and his family last week. Anytime someone rationalizes coming into contact with anyone that they haven't been spending the past couple of weeks with, it expands the bubble and increases the chance of infection. It doesn't seem good.
Hey, here's an idea....
How about just wishing the guy gets better?

Also, let's not forget ...
That you don't instantly feel symptoms, so if he started feeling sick on the 14th, he could have been infected a week or even more earlier, and people weren't really socially distancing then. There's a reason the quarantine period is two weeks.
People Let's Not Do The Blame Games
As difficult as it may be have contract this virus and than have grow through the entire full blow-out a pain and agony of the virus.
The last thing we want to start doing is start blaming one another for Contracting this virus. The virus has been in the city since January I'm just assuming we all have contracted this virus if not all of us at least 50% of the Boston population is infected. So don't blame Tito if you've contracted the virus you probably already had it.. We can never know and we will never know how any one of us contracted the virus virus or who they contracted it from.
Not it knock if off and Show love not hate. Say your Prayers.
For those shaming Tito for
For those shaming Tito for attending a gathering with seven people... On the 14th social distancing meant keep apart. It wasn't until a few days later that the restaurants were closed.
I had meetings cancelled the week leading up to this date but still had two.
I went to a coffee shop with friends and we all say several feet apart that same day.
People who wanted to shake my hand and got upset two weeks ago are now in bubbles judging people for things that happened two weeks ago. Unless you have an analytical mindset we tend to forget where the baseline was.
My judgement would be based off of how that dinner party went down. Hugs? Kisses? Or were they keeping a little distance?
I don't disparage Tito
For attending a gathering with seven people. But attending a birthday party sadly? If you can't show some cheer, don't go.
anthropomorphizing
Is it not a good time to object to anthropomorphizing a virus? Just a pet peeve...
Virology is actually very fascinating, and learning about how viruses work does as good a job to help you respect them, probably a better job than inciting panic to make you fear them. Or maybe I'm just an (fussy) optimist.
Thank you
First of all, viruses that take everyone out are not successful viruses - they die if we die. Not a great evolutionary strategy.
Viruses aren't even alive, actually - they need cells to hijack in order to reproduce. And they really don't care whose cells they hijack - opportunity is their game.
to be fair
I understood this to be the point he was making. Not put artfully, but the point nonetheless.
Food for thought.
The notion that especially-virulent viruses face an evolutionary challenge associated with excessive host mortality is supported with observational evidence. It is worth noting that zoonotic viruses such as COVID-19 have a different math in this regard - their impact on one of their multiple host populations is a lot less relevant to their overall success.
I'm glad to hear he's feeling
I'm glad to hear he's feeling better. Everyone else please listen to him. You may not have symptoms and you could be spreading it. And not everyone who gets it is lucky enough to survive.
