Roslindale supermarket getting new name and renovations

Winsight Grocery Business reports the cooperative that owns the Price Rite supermarket on River Street in Hyde Park has bought the Save A Lot chain, which has a supermarket in the strip mall on American Legion Highway (the discount-store one near Walk Hill Street, not the Stop & Shop one near Hyde Park).

The chain is also planning a new market in Dorchester.

Adam can you just simplify this?

  • Where exactly is the current supermarket? Address, please.
  • What is its current name?
  • What will be the new name of the market?
  • Will there be any significant changes?

The hyperlink you gave us isn't clear at all. I don't care about their market profile.-if anything just add that in at the end of the post

Save A Lot's address is 650 American Legion Highway. Or, as I mentioned, it's in the strip mall with all the discount stores near Walk Hill Avenue, as opposed to the strip mall at the other end of American Legion Highway with the Stop & Shop. This probably is only relevant to people in or near Roslindale, but it's been my experience that few people would know where 650 American Legion Highway is and if you say something is in "the strip mall on American Legion Highway," you then have to specify which one, since there are two of them.

It's joining a cooperative of supermarkets that operates under the Price Rite name. As the article does explain, they'll be keeping much of what they have now, but will be making some renovations and changes. I admit, I don't have specifics more than that (I suppose I could go back to the Price Rite in Hyde Park to look, but I admit it, I tend to be a Stop & Shop/Star Market kind of shopper).

But the ownership of the Save A Lot chain is remaining the same. The owner of the stores is joining the cooperative (Wakefern) which is better-known for its ShopRite stores which extend from Connecticut to Maryland, with most being in the NY metro. Most ShopRites are independently owned although the cooperative owns a number of stores.

The signage of the stores will change and presumably the merchandising may as well to more closely align with PriceRite. ShopRite is a full-service grocer more akin to Stop & Shop or Shaw's/Star

Price Rite and ShopRite are not the same.

Same company, different format (or market segment)

Sav-A-Lot doesn't have dancers, though...

This probably explains what's going on at the old America's Food Basket location in Fields Corner. It was announced it was going to re-open as Sav-A-Lot, then a couple of months ago they announced it was going to be a Price Rite, supposedly opening soon.

I'm not familiar with Price Rite. Maybe some of you Uhubbers are.

I’d say Price Rite in Hyde Park has much better produce, both in terms of variety and freshness, compared to Save-A-Lot in Roslindale.

the strip mall on American Legion Highway (the discount-store one near Walk Hill Street,

So I went there to check the place out, and found out that “strip mall” doesn’t mean what you might think. And I had prepared for my visit by going to the trouble of going to the bank and getting $100 worth of ones and everything. How disappointing. Lower Washington St back in the day, now that was a strip mall, amirite fellas?
