I'm surprised the museum cops didn't shoot him down like a dirty dog for taking a pic. That's generally frowned upon.

The MFA allows non flash photography in all galleries except for special exhibits, and generally then because they are on loan to the MFA from another institution and they don't control the rights (for example the Tomb 10a exhibit which they had last year DID allow photography because the items were all part of the MFAs own collection).

Historygradguy is right. Generally, most museums will let you take non-flash photos of items within their collection.

The ICA is a notable exception to that rule.

Yes indeed. A fact that I find ironic given their support for Shepard Fairey. I guess appropriating other people's art to create your own is only okay when the ICA can make money off of it.

This was embarrassing. The ICA was almost empty the afternon that I took a Russian visitor, a Fulbrighter, there. To start with, much of the ICA was closed off; OK, that happens. Then, guards are giving us the suspicious eye, and we even overheard one say something like "they've entered my area" into a radio or something when we entered a room. Finally, I take a photo of a room-sized piece with a DSLR, no flash even on the camera, when they pounce and tell me that photography is not permitted (something that they did not mention when we entered and paid). I was embarrassed in front of my guest. Way to give a good impression of our 'freedom-loving' capitalist society and general classiness to the Russians, ICA.

Is there ANYTHING that Boston does not find a way to do poorly?
