Kick Ass Cupcakes not all that
By adamg on Sun, 09/09/2007 - 11:01pm
Some Assembly Required and spouse head over to Davis Square for some of the new cupcakes; he reports they're either seriously over-priced at $2.75 or under-sized. He adds:
... Saturday we stopped in Ball Square to get a snack at Lyndell's bakery. They make some pretty great pastries; I'm quite partial to their raspberry danish. And they also make cupcakes, which are generously sized and cost 90 cents each.

Other expensive cupcakes
The Spotted Apron, in Beacon Hill -- it's a relatively new place -- has reasonably tasty cupcakes, but they're pretty much the size you'd make in a standard muffin pan at home, and they're $2.85.
They're yummy, and all, but honestly, nearly $3 for a CUPCAKE makes my eyes cross. Especially a cupcake that isn't at least bigger than usual.

Speaking of other expensive cupcakes:
On at least a couple of occasions, I've gotten a cupcake at the Whole Foods down on River Street that is not only fantastically big, but they have all different types of really elaborate frosting decorations on top. The cupcakes themselves are either chocolate or vanilla, but the frosting decorations are fantastic also.
Plus...they're the biggest cupcakes I've seen. they're about 3-4 dollars, I think. But....they. are. huge!
i liked it
FWIW - I thought the price was quite reasonable considering these are not Market Basket cupcakes, but cup-sized cakes with real cake batter, different frostings and toppings, etc. People don't bat an eye spending $3 or more for a slice of cake or a good cannoli in the North End, so I don't see why it should be much different for mini artisan cakes. I bought 3 cupcakes on Saturday and shared them with friends, we all thought they were scrumptious.
Can't speak for the Kick Ass Cupcakes
Can't speak for the Kick Ass Cupcakes, since I have neither seen nor tasted them, but the Spotted Apron ones were not exactly what I'd call 'artisan'. Nice tasting frosting and 2-3 fondant 'polka dots' do not an 'Artisan' make.
I'd even go so far as to agree with you if cake batter was a Really Wicked Difficult thing to make that entails much culinary education and buckets of talent, but.....it's not.

try it before you knock it :)
I don't use the word artisan lightly either. These aren't normal cupcakes.
Satisfaction index
Personally, I'm happy to pay more for something really worthwhile. If I get as much satisfaction from splitting a kickass cupcake with a friend, spouse, or child as I would from 70 twinkies, I think the kickass cupcake is a better deal, no?
As for cake batter, I can't do it. I can do souffle, complicated candy recipies, invent new trifles, and bake an apple pie that makes my neighbor cry for her long lost mama, but I can't seem to get cake right without a mix.
Another report
Yup files her initial report.
Honestly, nothing can ever
Honestly, nothing can ever beat a Party Favors (Coolidge Corner) cupcake for me...I try but I just can't do it. Heaven.
Meh
I was underwhelmed by party favors. The frosting is too thick (thicker than the cake sometimes) and not very good. I like buttercream frosting better. Oh, wait, they think that is buttercream frosting. So I should rephrase: I like my buttercream frosting to have butter in it. I like it like they make it at the Cupcake Cafe in NYC.
i tried kickass cupcakes,
i tried kickass cupcakes, beantown cupcakes, lulu, lyndell and spotted apron as well as that girl in somerville that sells cupcakes out of her hous.the girl selling cupcakes out of her house is by far the best cupcake from those that I eat (better than Magnolia cupcakes in ny) i also LOVE lulu cupcakes. they are amazing and they have other cool, delicious desserts that it makes the trip to the north end from somerville worth it.
lyndell has great cupcakes too but a bit on the boring side i only seen vanilla and chocolate) but i do love going to lyndell for danishes and other desserts
The worst cupcakes is a split between kickass cupcakes and beantown cupcakes. The cupcake itself (taste wise) is a bit better at beantown cupcakes but the service is a lot better at kickass cupcake. so you can either have horrible service and a semi-horrible cupcake at beantown cupcakes or good service and a disgusting cupcake at kickass cupcakes.
as for the spotted apron. the service is horrible but at least the cupcake is ediable leaning toward the delicious side. only down side is that it is super overpriced that I feel insulted that they would actually charge over $4 for a cupcake!
so once again...in order of best cupcakes to worst in the boston and greater boston area:
BEST: the girl that bake cupcakes at home in somerville
lulu
lyndell
spotted apron
beantown cupcakes
WORST: kickass cupcakes
KICK-*ss cupcakes SUCK*ss
OVERPRICED. We got there at 12:30 and they didnt have their cupcake of the day. My cupcake the mojito was very good, but crumbled to pieces all over my lap. There is no place to sit.
Hope this helps
You spelled "ass" wrong.
Kick*ss
At least one of the signs outside this establishment is spelled with a "*" rather than an "a".
ass!
Yeah, that seems to be their logo, but they spell "ass" correctly otherwise throughout their website.
"Suck ass" is definitely spelled as so, unless it recently up and became a logo!
Is that why '*' is called an
Is that why '*' is called an assterisk?
kick ass cupcakes
im commenting on kick ass cupcakes in somerville, ma, i ws so embarrassed to put the 6 cupcakes out on my kitchen table at christmas, i paid 18.00 for 6 hocky pucks, they were awful. tiny little bricks they were..
kick-ass yum!
Wow, I can't believe what I'm reading! I think Kick-Ass Cupcakes is AMAZING. Rich chocolate, tangy lemon, and all around delicious flavors. The texture of the cake and frosting is perfect. hockey pucks? that's called dense, and it costs way more to make a dense cake than a light one. They use really good ingredients, which also adds to the cost.
They have a vegan option, which is great for my no-milk brother in law. I can't believe everyone isn't swooning over these things!
You're a shill, right?
Sorry, anon, but your recommendation cannot possibly be trusted.
I predict the time for merchants (including those vc-funded fake recommenders now polluting the world) to realize this will never work will be about 6 months more.
we're pretty smart, we techno citizens.
What's in Your Cupcake?
LSD I'm guessing - I tried one once and the frosting was good but the rest of it was dry and overbaked. Not a good value.
Hockey puck does NOT mean dense - it means RUBBERY AND HARD. The one I had was dry and tasteless and hard NOT "dense". Okay, maybe "dense" as in "theoretically dense" ... like it had been put in a hot isostatic press. Translation: inedible.
If you want a DENSE cupcake, Lyndell's has them.
Kickass Cupcakes
Kickass cupcakes is a dissapointment. For someone who said they researched cupcake places in LA ..the result here is embarrassing. The only thing in common with the places in LA is the word cupcakes..
Small cheap little store with decor of someone with a tiny budget..that makes tiny cupcakes. There are too many changes to be made for this place to survive. Sorry just very dissapointed!! I expected so much more
