Why, hello there, Ms. Chang-Diaz

The proposed state House and Senate redistricting maps are out (Boston-area House districts / Senate). The thing that hit me immediately, since, of course, I looked at our place on the map, is that a piece of Roslindale (specifically, ours) would get shifted from Mike Rush to Sonia Chang-Diaz.

It tells me something that very small geographic municipalities such as Somerville and Brookline (and particularly Brookline - Somerville I can see because of the density) are each carved up into 4 separate districts. And what it tells me does not fill me with confidence that this is not overly political as usual (that Brookline 5 in with the 15th Suffolk is a particularly noticeable one - we have to make sure that John Henry and friends are neutralized!).
By the way, what's up with "Watertown Town" and "Winthrop Town"?

Somerville has only 3 House districts
or, more specifically, it has one House district and parts of two others. Same as it does now, though the new boundaries are slightly different.

My comment still stands for Brookline though. The map seems to have been drawn specifically to eliminate any chance of a Republican vote from there - clearly someone folks noticed all of the Sean Bielat signs that were popping up in precincts 13, 14, 15 and 16 last fall.

Not sure if that's really the case, as that district is unchanged from the previous map. (And I can only speculate what sort of mood swing Finneran was going through the day he made the district like that.)
4th Suffolk or God's Country
4th Suffolk lost the Roxbury precinct and most of the Polish triangle aka St. Margaret's.... Those neighborhoods were traditionally woefully underrepresented by Southie pols :( Probably a good move by the legislature...sadly. Surprised Harbor Point didn't go to Marty Walsh too...

Fourth Suffolk lost 4.5 out
Fourth Suffolk lost 4.5 out 15 streets in the Polish Triangle. Less than a 3rd = not most. Most = 50%+. Marty Walsh is a good advocate who grew up in St. Margaret's parish, went to school there and most of his family is still there. So the rest of the Polish Triangle is in good hands. Collins and Walsh will make a good team over there.

Everything old is new again
My little section of Roslindale had been in the Wilkerson/Chang-Diaz district prior to the last census when we were redrawn into the Mike Rush/Marian Walsh seat. Personally I think it makes more sense to draw us back into Chang-Diaz... we don't have a heck of a lot in common with Dedham over here off of Hyde Park Ave.

And honest-to-God... explain to me WHY 19-12 is STILL in Russell Holmes 6th Suffolk. Honestly. I don't *get* why we can't be in Liz Malia's district like we were pre-2000 census.

Where around the web are there maps showing the street names bordering the Boston City Council Districts?...
Nowhere i can see
I was looking at how I might be able to do that. There's nothing I can do quickly at work, but it can be done in Google Earth. If I get a chance tonight, I might upload a version overlaid on street maps that way.
It's not that hard at all...
...but it's not clean
Go to the Boston Atlas and click on one of the newer viewers. The viewers work on levels. The higher levels are on top of the page, the lower ones on the bottom, so make sure "2006 Boston Street Names" is the highest level, perhaps on the top one. Below that put "2003 City Councilor Districts", which is found under "City of Boston", then "Political Boundaries" District boundaries with streets. Voila!
Everyone else can just play with the Boston Atlas.

Senator Chang Diaz has done the district proud. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would love to see someone fighting for higher property values for upper middle class homeowners in JP. I'm proud to have supported a woman who has stuck with her values and fought for those who's voices often don't get heard.
I find it interesting that her district boundaries were moved out of chinatown, Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Fenway, and into a lot more Mattapan and Dorchester, as well as Roslindale. Substantially more people of color in the new district. It will be interesting to see what impact that has long-term.

So they stole her limousine liberals and gave her Mattapan? That will hurt come fundraising time. One house party on Beacon Hill is worth a year of squeezing Mattapan and Rozzie.

What makes you think she won't still be doing those house parties on Beacon Hill for some Franklins? Limousine liberals will frequently hold fund-raisers for candidates running in districts where the hosts don't live. And actually I suspect more of them will be in Cambridge rather than Beacon Hill. But I'm not sure as I haven't received my invitation yet...

Although it kind of already felt that way in Marian Walsh's later, pre-Patrick-job-offer days.
But Chang-Diaz and Scaccia actually have something in common: She fought a yuppified supermarket and so did he - he fought a liquor license for a Wegman's in frickin' Westwood (way, way out of his district, but a big threat to his best buds, the Roche family).
Roslindale gets the short end AGAIN!
When seeing the map for the prospective five State Representative and two State Senate districts, I realized that my testimony before the Joint Committee on Redistricting back in May requesting a Roslindale centered State Representative and keeping Roslindale in one State Senate district was completely ignored. Roslindale gets broken up again to fill out districts for neighborhoods that have multiple elected officials that reside there. This is taxation without representation, it wasn't fair in 1776 and it is a raw deal today.
