Sometimes, cuteness takes awhile to be appreciated

Channel 5 tracks down the Andover father whose video of his daughter saying "bye!" to people going down a Copley Place escalator became an Internet sensation this week - two years after he posted it.

No, sir, thank God you're on
No, sir, thank God you're on it. We should be grateful your snark was at the ready to protect us from appreciating something sweet. The collective "awwww" could have shaken the very foundations of our society. Well done.

Hey I can appreciate the cute
Hey I can appreciate the cute factor I'm just commenting on Channel 5, don't want to rain on the parade but I just think they could be covering more important things.
Thank you, Debbie Downer. Not
Thank you, Debbie Downer. Not happy until everyone everywhere is as miserable as you.
Although the little girl is
Although the little girl is an absolute darling, lifting content off of YouTube is not news, but a gratuitous cuteness pander, who could resist smiling at this video.
At one time, local TV stations covered local news other than car crashes and house fires. They had full-time statehouse reporters who actually covered the business that went on in the statehouse.
Channel 5 in particular excelled at doing longer pieces using excellent reporters who had expertise in particular areas such as Clark Booth's coverage of the Catholic church, both locally and in Rome.
When the story required it, they added additional reporting muscle and did longer investigative pieces. Imagine for a moment how much reporting heft have the local stations put into covering the MBTA crisis? The shifting of big dig debt onto the MBTA? What is the state of the Commonwealth's public higher education system? The student loan crisis? Perhaps there should be some investigative coverage of how well Romney care has performed in MA?
These stories require the use of reporters and producers who are educated and can critically think. As well as investing the time in allowing them to actually investigate.
The trend for a long time has been to hire charming, attractive, personalities who affect a 'favorite neighbor' tone rather than provide the necessary information that the public needs to make informed political decisions om a democratic society.
Back to you Heather.
People get the news they deserve
Back in the day news divisions at local stations were almost like non-profits -- they were loss leaders and weren't expected to generate revenue. Broadcasts didn't have to pander for ratings, and they could tackle controversial topics without the fear of pissing off advertisers.
I'm not sure exactly when this changed -- someone with a longer memory could probably give an estimate -- but it's all about ratings these days. There's no room in the budget for full-time State House reporters if people aren't tuning in to see their stories. And most viewers seem to prefer attractive anchors and stories about either cute babies and animals (PANDA WATCH!) or grizzly murders and car accidents, instead of in-depth investigative reporting.
Finally adam
Something to smile about in this cold, grumpy town!
/Bye!
Hmm
I was thinking today that if SOPA/PIPA had become law, could people who post videos like this sue TV networks/shows that broadcast them without their permission? Seems like a good way to stop stations from trolling the Internets for "news."

Awwww! I remember when my son was two.
He would say goodbye to everyone on the T. And yes, many would wave back.
Have Happy!
One of mine knew there was sometimes something to go with "goodbye", so he would tell store clerks and such "bye bye have happy!".
This little one is definitely helping people to "have happy".
We also had one of those ancient Volvo station wagons with the rear-facing kid-sized jump seat in the back when they were preschoolers. There was much waving.

Fun Experiment
Have someone like me - big hairy male, dresses like your average stoner in his 50's - do the same. Shoot the vid from the same angle. I'm thinking it would be an hysterical follow-up.
(I am NOT saying me specifically. I have a full schedule for the next two or three eons. But I'm sure somebody here may be willing. Just give me one of those "From a concept by..." credits.)

Is already way onto your sense of humor.
Yeah
I should get a different sense of humor :-)
(Smiley face! That's 'cause I'm not sure if I was being complimented, dissed, or just generally commented upon, but I'm an attention whore and don't want anyone to dislike me, whatever the case may be.)

Fart jokes and un-politically/socially correct humor is funny. The butthurt people who find it offense (on both sides) need to chill.
