The official Cowboy of the Commonwealth needs an official Sandwich of the Commonwealth on those long trail rides

So what was state Rep Kathi Reinstein's initial reaction to the news that her colleagues will consider making Rex Trailer the official state cowboy?

"What about Fluff?" the Revere Democrat tweeted this morning.

Of course! You may recall Reinstein filed a bill in 2006 to make the Fluffernutter the official Sandwich of the Commonwealth after state Sen. Jarrett Barrios, D-Somerville-for-Christ's-sake, proposed banning Fluff from school menus.

Reinstein followed up that she has not filed a Fluffernutter bill this year, but:

Am ALWAYS a supporter of Fluff. If enough people reach out perhaps I'll file it again.

So, people, get at her.

I think it is great that our state may soon have an official state cowboy, but isn't it more important that our legislators concentrate on other important things, like figuring how to better fund transportation in the state?

There's a lot of cows in Massachusetts, but that doesn't mean there are cowboys per se. New England doesn't have as much flat empty space to wander around in, so the herding of cows has a different sort of character to it from cattle drives and all that. (And it's not like Rex Trailer had anything to do with the actual Massachusetts cattle industry.)

It is known that the herd arrived at Boston Common almost a month later, mostly intact, and yielded Pynchon a handsome profit. This was the first long drive on record of fat-cattle to a city market anywhere in the present boundaries of the United States.

That was 1655. Read the history recorded at this website...pretty impressive.

Those cows in Ware were an escaped dairy herd. They were not part of a cattle drive.

Have you ever gotten a day off of school for a cattle drive through your community? I have.

Dairy farms and cattle farms have farmers. Ranches have ranchers. Cowboys work cattle that graze on open range. I know the difference. Massachusetts State Dairy Farmer would make sense. A State Cowboy is a romantic notion sprung fully formed from Zane Gray's forehead, dressed up all western-like to go to the Hilltop.

Now that we have an official state cowboy maybe he can ride shotgun on MBTA busses to keep them the drivers from being pummelled when the fare higes are implemented at the Circle T Ranch
