Good God, not another cupcake place in the Back Bay

Mike the Mad Biologist is mad that his neighborhood is getting another damn cupcake outlet, when residents can't even buy a loaf of fresh bread.

doesn't panificio bake and sell bread? And Whole Foods (it is 100 feet from Beacon Hill). Surely there must be a place selling Iggy's-- Savenor's?

You can get iggy's at Baco's wine and cheese shop in the park square building. Moderately priced wines good beer selection and great cheeses. Owner used to manage wine dept for delucas.

The Panificio in Back Bay closed years ago, unfortunately. They couldn't get a liquor license for a long time after they opened and I think that's what put them under.

While I agree and would kill for a, say, permanent When Pigs Fly location (though they do do the farmers markets), Georgetown Cupcakes was announced in December, so it's not really another new one, by my (skewed? maybe) logic.

But no, Panera doesn't count. They're more of a sandwich shop.

Can't get fresh bread? There's plenty of delicious freshly baked *organic* bread to be had at the symphony whole foods, just down the road from the back bay - their crusty sourdough breads (pain de campaigne, pain de levaine) are amazing.

However, while we're talking food and the Back Bay - Bhindi Bazaar on Mass Ave is gone. They were there just the other day! My favorite Indian Restaurant in Boston. Gone! A sudden disappearing act similar to that of Island Hopper. Anyone know what the plans are for that building? Is it being sold? Is Other Side Cafe safe? *sniff*

No JP licks, No Bhindi Bazaar, No Island Hopper - what's a hungry resident to do?

There is a large addition, I think about six floors scheduled for where the Otherside was and the rest will connect to add one more major chain to the neighborhood.

The owner of Sleep-a-ramma told me they are re-doing the whole building over the next two years, by which point it will be ready for this mysterious 'Large Furniture Store'. I think it is sad that so many small businesses had to close for this chain store that clearly the Back Bay doesn't want. Best Buy, right across the street, just closed!

I always felt a cupcake shop would never be a satisfying enough experience for when I'm either hungry or just wanting something sweet. Shove 'em in a pint of Ben & Jerry's and that's a different story.

You can't even really fault the business owners. They got this dumb idea that cupcake shops are a trendy and profitable business from external sources. It's all Sarah Jessica Parker's fault.

Its the "Sex-and-the-City-ification" of Boston. Add to that the fact that Boston's population is made up mostly of gormless college students who wouldn't know a good bread or pastry if it fell on them, plus about a zillion people who've never traveled further than the Cape, and you've got a perfect market for cupcakes.

Of course the blogger is correct in that there are no bakeries in the Back Bay. There should be someplace where people could get fantastic baked goods, breads, pastries, sandwiches with tables and seating. That would mean Boston might make it into the world-class city catgeory, but don't hold your breath.

Instead, let's make due with the fat people wadddling in and out of Panera bread who think Panera's wonder bread crap is good quality.

Maybe the city council will require cupcake shops go before the zoning board before opening
