Parts of Hyde Park to get sprayed with pesticide Friday

The Suffolk County Mosquito Control Project will have trucks going around parts of Hyde Park between dusk and 11:30 p.m. spraying for mosquitoes, the Boston Public Health Commission says.
The specific areas: Streets surrounding Wolcott Square and Meadow Road in Readville, streets beetween Truman Parkway and the Milton line, and the area near the golf course: Gordon Avenue, Austin Street and DeForest Street. If it rains, the spraying will be done on Monday.
The trucks will spray sumithrin:
Mosquito control applications of sumithrin do not pose a significant risk to people or pets due to the chemical’s low toxicity and small amount used in spraying. As with any pesticide, people are advised to minimize their exposure to the chemical. If people see a spray truck approaching, they should go indoors for a few minutes while the spray dissipates. Residents are also advised to close any windows that face the street during the scheduled spraying hours.

Light on human, heavy on bees
Hmmm, highly toxic to bees and fish, eh?

The mosquitos are not that bad. I'm cultivating a bee garden. I'ma gonna call that number.

Which seem to have unusually strict agricultural zoning for some reason, but otherwise, I think it's one of those things you can apply for permission for. The Intercontinental Hotel has a largeish beekeeping operation on its roof.

Beekeeping is fine and I know several hive folk in town.
While in theory, chickens are OK, the reality is that Boston won't issue the necessary permits and the various neighborhood zoning rules prevent chicken raising.
I see the city does have new regs in the works and coming up for public hearings for both bees and chickens. Even these stronger bee ones aren't onerous. You have to make the hives available for inspection, you need to have taken a apiary course, you have to have fresh water around so the bees won't seek swimming pools, and if you put your hives on property you share with others, you have to get them to agree to it. Si all seem things beekeepers do anyway.

they are spraying Sumethrin (Phenothrin) to kill mosquitos. This spray is known to be toxic in animals and humans as well. WHY are we not properly notified ??? Windows open, animals in yards...
please call the state1781 899 5730 and complain to David Henley and the Mayers hotline 617-635-4500 and speak to Justin. Please pass the word along to make the residents of Boston and West Roxbury aware this is happening.

No. It was abolished in the late 1990s, along with Middlesex, Essex and possibly a couple of other counties. The mosquito control programs are chartered by the state and owned and administered by the several communities in their service area.
