Every game that Pedro took the mound in the late 90s/early 2000s was an event. You knew there was a good chance that you would see something incredible happen. I've never experienced that with another player. This is why Pedro is my favorite athlete of all time. Can't wait to drive out to Cooperstown to see his induction speech.

Absurd he only received 91% of the votes.

rick gosselin from dallas feels like he is a very important guy.

Gosselin, via email, said he withheld his vote from Martinez because he is “judicious” with players on the ballot for the first time.

“Not all Hall of Famers are created equally in my eyes. A select few are deserving of that first ballot honor. I vote on the Pro Football Hall of Fame as well and I’m just as judicious there,” Gosselin wrote. “I don’t vote for many first-ballot candidates. It doesn’t mean I don’t think they are Hall of Famers. This is a selection process — not an all-or-nothing vote on one player, one year. I’m just very select with those I vote on the first ballot. I reserve those votes for the extraordinary.

“Randy Johnson with his 300 wins and five Cy Youngs was a first ballot in my eyes. Pedro is certainly deserving of the Hall of Fame, but not in my eyes on the first ballot.”

also, I used to live near fenway and I knew a way to sneak in if I was alone. I must have seen clemens pitch a hundred times and pedro probably 75 times. pedro was better, much better for a five year period. he also did it without PEDs while pitching against PED monsters for his whole career.

Still, he's supposed to be a writer, and should know there's no 'J' in ridiculous.

Thank you for the non-sequitur. Let me try.

Nothing against Pedro, but you should have seen Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's!

Asked his ambition, he says "I'd like to (expletive) Sandra Bullock." Reminded that it's for a kids' magazine, he says "I'd like to make love to Sandra Bullock."

Aside from being (possibly) the premier pitcher in Red Sox history, Pedro Martinez was one of the best interviewees. A very intelligent and articulate man, even in his second language, his induction speech should be a corker.

I'll always remember his amazing smile during the entirety of the victory parade in 2004. He was the happiest man in Boston.

Washington Post: Curt Schilling says being a Republican cost him Hall of Fame votes.

Good thing baseball writers aren't concerned about his performance as a businessman.

"I do know there are guys who probably will never vote for me because of the things I said or did. That’s the way it works."

True enough. If the sports writers thought you were an insufferable blowhard, well then yeah, they might not vote for you. The Hall of Fame is closer to a High School popularity contest than some sort of scientific evaluation of the greats (sort of like the Oscars, Emmy's, all the other sports hall of fame, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and, apparently, the Nobel Peace Award - I mean, Obama? for what??).

But Smoltz is not exactly a member of the Sacco & Vanzetti Commemoration Society. Supported Ralph Reed way back when. I think Schil should be in there, if for nothing else than the bloody sock incident. Great entertainment! As good as any other reason.
