Worst sign of spring ever: The frickin' brain-dead copy of Globe Direct in front of our house

Went out this morning to run the kidlet up to her bus stop and there was one of John Henry's little Globe Direct poop bags filled with stuff we don't want that stupid John Henry seems unable to stop his minions from fouling our street with. And it's not to be confused with the bright red Globe Direct bag that disappeared into the snow on our front porch in January or February only to recently reappear like some of the steaming dog waste that it's only marginally better than.

My neighbor was cutting the plow tailing in February and BZZZZZOUNT! Shredded rather nicely, considering.

I also found about four of them when I cleared out and trimmed up my front garden last fall.

The guy just hurls them and speeds off - won't even talk to people who just want to ask him to aim for the steps!

Maybe we all have to collect them and drop them off at the house of someone responsible for the mess?

I would rather see dog shit on our sidewalks more than John Henrys globe direct garb

I mean, you would rather step dog shit than have your Bruno Magli's touch a Globe Direct?

You would rather have your kid pick up and toss a pile of dog shit than pick up and toss a bunch of ads in a bag?

Sorry, but I see the dislike of the ads, but come on.

One of my neighbors has been somewhere warm since right before it started snowing. This morning the glacier on their front steps had receded enough to expose half of a Globe Direct embedded in it. I really should have taken a picture, but I was in a hurry.

(I'd have made an Oetzi joke, except it's already been done here weeks ago.)

Someone needs to organize a meet-up at Globe HQ to dump all of these back on their lawn.

Or on Sergeant Crossway in Brookline.

meeting up in general. Would be nice to put a face with the name..!

because, you know...

Because 20% of adults have hearing loss. 33% of adults over 65 do.

And we have a civil right to participate in municipal government.

he was making a funny toward Theszak who always brings this up.

But you're right!

but no offense intended (the worst phrase, I know) I was simply making a joke about a certain poster's propensity to jam steno issues into topics which are only tangentially relevant.

You wouldn't really expect stenographic records of a non-governmental social meeting though, right?

It would only help elevate the already-pretty-darn-good discussion level here. I just don't want to organize it.

It should come from Adam. I'll help org but I need support from others and adam.

Adam should make and sell UHub buttons, or we should develop a secret handshake.

I think it's funny that some of us must cross paths everyday.

LOL

tell me about it.. what's going to be funny is if/when we all meet we're all going to go

"oh I've seen you at so and so"

Some people I already know off line.. so its not that much of a stretch.

We should do it. It would be fun!! I'l even allow myself to be the punching bag if that makes people want to come.

Mark's only coming to the event if it is at a site with adequate parking FYI.

...how about the "pinky swear" from the current Aspen Dental commercial? :)

Skim the plastic bags off first, of course, then stack them up in a tower, add some kindling and whoosh!

We could even set up a special receptacle in a large public place and let them accumulate over a number of days before torching it. Maybe even something that floats and do the waterfire thing on the river or channel with it? Art, I say, Art!

They'll just order some minimum-wage peon to clean them up. If you want to make an impression, go to Henry's house, drop them there, and get yourselves arrested.

Sergant Crossway is where Henry lives.

up
Voting closed 0

He moved.

up
Voting closed 0

He just knocked down the old place after much kerfuffle by the historical folks and build a new one like 4 years ago?

up

But that's not on sgt. Crossway. It's on Cottage I believe. He lived on Sgt. crossway before.

Google Maps show driveways to both streets. I bet he uses the one with the gate. I would.

But that's Sgt. road anyway (officially 40 Cottage St.) Interesting story about the last two houses on Sgt. Crossway though. They are in Boston, but Boston police/fire/ems do not have access off of Perkins St. because of a locked gate. So Brookline responds to calls at those houses. If its something serious, BPD will have jurisdiction though.

I get the feeling you don't like the Globe Direct.

up

... that you don't have a front walk or porch full of these stupid things ... when they actually manage to hit those targets.

One Palm Sunday when I was a kid (early 1970s), I reached into the side of the pew and pulled out a church bulletin that was ten years old.

John Henry should pick up Boston's snow removal tab, afterall , the reason the snow was high in Boston was because John Henry had his men secretly deliver thousands of globe direct packages in the overnight hours during blizzard, making the mounds of snow even higher.

There are no constitutional rights protecting the unwanted distribution of physical materials on private property, correct? Would it not pass constitutional muster to pass a law saying any distributor of printed materiel placed on private property when specifically told not to is subject to a $100 fine per item?

Pass that law! On the state level.

If I took my recycling, put it in a plastic bag, and throw it onto people's yards I would be stopped by the police, no?

Only one problem - enforcement.

We would need a do-not-mail list. Using the Direct Mail Marketing works only to some extent.

up
Voting closed 0

Mine gets mailed to me too. Supposedly you can unsubscribe at https://services.bostonglobe.com/cs/sccancel.aspx, but I still get them in the mail despite doing that. YMMV. @GlobeDirect had a number too on twitter: https://twitter.com/globedirect but when I tried it it was out of service.

The most annoying thing about it to me is the fact that they're mailed loosely, so I'll end up with actual bills stuck in between the pages of useless globe direct advertising crap.

up

A very excellent question. Here's hoping someone actually goes forward on these ideas to dump whatever at the Globe or at Henry's house.

up

John Henry would never see them -- they'd be cleaned up by caretakers before he looked out the window.

No, put them all on the steps of city hall in a big media event (or Walsh's front door) and let them deal with it. Or maybe right outside a Boston 2024 event.

That's how you get results.

And thankfully I don't get Globe Direct and I hope I never will. I do however get the equally useless Redplum bundle of ads each week via US Mail. At least its not wrapped in plastic. The paper goes directly to the recycling bin.

up
Voting closed 0

It says Globe direct, but its just a stack of ads and coupons, about 20-30 pages. Is this the same thing Boston residents get?

up
Voting closed 0

Pretty much...

You might get a direct mail version or a curbside version (or both).

I'm in the minority, but I want the insert coupons (and occasionally a really good coupon elsewhere in the thing).

up
Voting closed 0

i called the number. Asked them to stop sending them to me. They stopped.

up

But, at least in my case, phone calls, e-mails and Twitter exchanges have failed to stop the onslaught.

up

Globe Direct ranks right up there with menu delivery as things you just may never be able to get rid of.

So it's basically like syphilis.

No, wait. That's curable nowadays. So it's worse than syphilis.

Improve the quality of the content, improve the quality of the ads in the packet. Many of the ads are cheesy, inferior, deceptive, particularly the Bernie&Phil's Furniture mattress ads.

C'mon, John Henry. Every hear of a website?
