Green Line trolley dies in shower of sparks; downtown service now dead, too

UPDATE: MassDOT says service was restored at 4:10 p.m.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m., riders on an outbound C trolley that had just left Park Street saw a shower of sparks. And then the train died.

Sarah Rubeinstein, who was one of the passengers, reports riders sat there until evacuated by T workers - who led them down the tracks to Boylston.

"Most terrifying 8 minutes of my life!" she says.

As it died, the train possibly pulled something down from the roof of the nation's oldest subway tunnel, which now has some significant damage.

The T is advising people to take the Orange Line for downtown and Back Bay points, due to "severe" delays related to a "power problem." All service is halted between Arlington and Haymarket.

Riverside is much larger. Plus it really is the place where trains go when they die!

As someone who uses both the Green and the Orange Lines, I really hope they fix this before the evening commute. Surely they will...right? right?? Bueller?

Now that the Olympic distraction is over we can get back to keeping our infrastructure improvements on track like opening the Green Line Extension in 2014.

I re-read the title a few times convinced I had somehow missed the rhyme you always put in these headlines, Adam.

That'll show my original headline (minus some words such as "the" and "on"). I changed it when it seemed like it was going to be more serious than your run-of-the-mill dead trolley.

MBTA site mentions C&D lines are originating at Kenmore, but makes no mention of B or E lines. Are these originating at Copley, does anyone know?

Hope this is cleared up eveningtime.

There is NO interruption in service between Arlington and all points west on all four branches of the Green Line.

Wish I'd known before I got off the Orange Line at DTX and tried to transfer at Park.

The far entrance is blocked off with cones, but people are just going around them. They have employees announcing the shutdown, but a ton of people are just ignoring them and standing around complaining that no trains are coming. I'm walking to Arlington.

They need to shut down the central subway portion of the green line on weekends to do infrastructure work and improve tracks, signals and overhead wires to improve punctuality and reliability of the green line service.

Red Line - Overcrowded and Longer than way normal wait times in both directions due to a reduction in trains. No announcements and notifications of delays.
Orange Line - As usual.
Blue Line - Normal.
Green Line - Suspended through downtown due to power issues. Use the orange line but it's going to be packed in with regular rush hour crowd.

The walk down the tracks has now become a Bostonian rite of passage.
