Who's painting the shells of live snails and leaving them on Carson Beach?

Gabrielle Schaffner picked up a handful of painted snails on Carson Beach today and wonders what's going on.

Taste the rainbow!

Is this a hipster thing?

Probably a bunch of young kids thing. Or, maybe, a bored people with nail polish thing.

n/t

Pet stores tend to sell painted shells for hermit crabs, but then again, hermit crabs have an exoskeleton, while snails have gross gooey skin.

There's the stress of painting, and that anything other than tempera will probably interfere with the functional properties of their shells.

Tempura is the best way to prepare snails. Just as the French.

people should knock this off.

it's got hipster and/or art school student written all over it.

That's why I'm thinking girl scouts gone bad ...

...but most universities do have a "fine art" department of some sort.

Anyway, I don't know if this is the work of an actual art student or what, but I doubt it was a kid. Probably some shitty stoner 20-year-old.

All of Boston's ranked art schools (MFA Museum School, MassArt, BU's CFA, etc) have pretty rigorous entrance exams where you need to prove you can do more then paint a snail a single color. You might not like the art of these students but they've got plenty of talent and they aren't wasting their time painting snails a single color.

I'm thinking is was some under-18 kid, maybe a grade schooler out for an "activity" with their folks or class.

"it's got hipster and/or art school student written all over it."

No, it's got elementary school student written all over it. If this is all an art school student can come up with maybe they should switch majors.

An elementary-school kid would paint them, then beg his parents for an aquarium to keep the snails in.

Snail polish.

It's the work of someone who's arrogant enough to believe they can, and should, improve on nature. Consequences are irrelevant.

They were born like that!

Maybe same person who left Teddy Bears along the benches near lagoon.

Snails salon just opened somewhere nearby, in South Boston or Dorchester.

Spiral, trying to go viral

Periwinkles?

Maybe the lighter blue one.
