Messed up Green Line trolley

Harry Wong noticed today that somebody spent a fair amount of time decorating a Green Line trolley at the Cleveland Circle yard with a large representation of a classic English word.

Alas for Tagger Dude, that's an un-rebuilt old trolley, so it's not going anywhere, except to get fixed and repaired (the Globe reports it's not one of the trolleys heading to upstate New York for a major overhaul). Also, when it comes to taggers, T cops go into Mountie mode.

I wonder if the tagger only targeted this train because it was [very obviously] slated for refurbishment. I saw them roll it into view at Reservoir this morning while standing on the inbound platform. I was like "lol poor car, was in bad enough condition already."

But I'm pretty sure that "the car was going to be rebuilt anyway" will be their defense when the Transit Police eventually catch them.

the tagger actually did the T a favor and made the train look better than it did before. Would have been more poignant if he had scrawled "0 FUCKS GIVEN" or something to that effect. These badly neglected trains crawling around our city are an eyesore and an embarassment! I saw an orange line train not too long ago where the rain gutters were rotted right through to the inner cabin. Just a hole straight through the hull. They keep hiking fares and talkin about how broke the T is. Where does the money go? Millions of dollars in revenue every. Single. Day. Just vanishes....

Where does the money go?

To the T's bloated payroll and pension fund, of course. You didn't think it would got to maintenance and upkeep, did you?

You know they are replacing the Orange Line cars. They will even be assembled right here in Massachusetts.

Also, I don't know if you ever studied this, but the T's revenue doesn't cover their costs, so after salaries, energy costs, debt service and all that they are in the hole if you just factor their revenue.

That's where the money goes.

Debt service, salaries, energy costs. But you are correct otherwise.

The Globe actually talked to the T, which says it's not one of the cars due for a ride to upstate New York, but that it will be repainted. I've updated my post with that info.

...all of the original order of Type 7's (3600-3699) are going for rebuild. As bad as it looks, it's possible the paint is the worst issue on it and it's going to be held for a while. For the most part, the rebuild process is starting with a lot of the worst cars first.

Given the state of the actual paint job under the tag, I'm sure plenty of the green & white will come off when it's cleaned.

Looks like original green & white, wonder if 3699's never been repainted in it's lifetime (well, until last night).

The ones at the front of the line for rebuild are the ones in mechanically the worst shape. And any that crap out automatically move to the front of the line instead of being repaired in-house. 3699 might look like it got beat with the ugly stick, but if it's slotted in one of the last batches to get rotated out that means it's a good-condition unit. Some of those shiny like-new ones now coming back from New York had just as many ugly-ass rust spots on them before they left, and they look pretty spiffy right now (bonus: no more teal!).

If the T picks up the option order on the rebuild contract they do the considerably newer 3700's next, and will attempt to salvage working A- and B- ends of some of the accident wrecked cars in long-term storage to net up to 3 more re-mated units to return to service. Those things will outlast the Breda lemons handily.

By the way, guys, this isn't NYC. Have you ever seen a T vehicle that got hit by taggers go back into service the next day before all offending evidence was scrubbed squeaky clean? Paint shop doesn't even screw around with the historic display cars at Boylston getting blemished. Meanwhile, the taggers *were* NYCT's paint shop for a good 30 years there. Boston has never tolerated that behavior like New York and other cities have. Taggers gonna tag, and you can't seal every yard airtight every single night when gates have to be open to get graveyard shift staff and equipment in/out to do maintenance. It's going to happen. If the incidents are kept few and far between and they sustain good success rate nailing the bastards who do it, then they're doing an above-average job managing a natural hazard affecting most big-city transit operators.

He's not a tagger, he's a "street artist". C'mon Adam, get with it!

"streetcar artist"?

Technically correct, tagging is usually name-based, IIRC.

I'm all for bringing back the stocks as punishment for graffiti vandals. They want attention, let's give it to them.

Plenty of people still walk by there, plus you just put it on the internet. Also, everyone I know who tags in Boston says the T usually won't roll out even a functioning car if it's bombed like that if they can avoid it, so I doubt he was expecteing to see it running down Beacon St.

Does anyone else think that security in t-yards is a joke. This vandal and others must have spent hours in the yard setting up with ladders and scaffolding and no one noticed? They could have stolen the trolley and no one would have noticed!
