of hateful? Anything you disagree with or find offensive (which is highly subjective)? I see troll-like comments on Uhub all the time, from every political and ideological angle, usually from those with accounts, some of whom apparently believe this entitles them to post the kind of troll-like comments they complain some anons attempt to post.

Just ssying.

As for anonymous vs. logged-in users: Yes, I give logged-in users a lot more leeway. Over the past few years, it seems to work - in general, logged in users do not threaten or suggest horrible deaths to other posters, they basically own their words, and while some might seem trollish at times, they are not turning this site into the sort of cesspool that my earlier attempt at a forum wound up as (and that having been said, yes, I have deleted a very tiny number of accounts).

That phrase has become the new code word for "Not being racist/bigoted or anything but....."

up

It's called a "micro agression", when one occurrs liberals will run to the nearest cubby space. Also know as a "safe space".

"Waaaaaaah. Adam won't let me spew hatred, ignorance, and bigotry on his blog. Waah-waah-waah. I'm white and fragile. I need to maintain a feeling of superiority to others or I will crumble to pieces. You don't understand, racism is who I am. It's the air that I breathe. Stop oppressing me with your rhetoric of justice and equality."

Gotta love anecdotal interpretations

Adam of course you are by no means obligated to provide a platform for anyone since this is your own personal website , but dont you think the free exchange of ideas is important ? Do you not think it is important to tell someone why they are wrong , rather than just shutting them down and having them live in perpetual ignorance?

That would involve codifying things and I know people are very, very good at figuring out ways around specific rules (don't think I didn't notice how clever people got at trying to come up with alternatives for the word "thug" when I said I was banning that from the site), which would result in me spending even more time writing up new rules and explanations and before you know it I'm spending all my time moderating comments instead of, oh, finding actual news to write about or link to.

I suspect you mean well with the "free exchange of ideas" and all, but I tried that once with another site and it failed completely: At the end, the site consisted of about three people yelling about how Democrats are all traitors who should die. So, no, I'm not going to go that route.

What that means is that for now I'm going with two rules: One is a variant of Potter Stewart's definition of pornography - with the understanding that, yes, I'm a liberal and all that, and not some bile-spewing Trump/Cruz/Carson supporter. The other is, to be honest, "I don't care." I look at a comment I think is racist, I go with Potter Stewart. I look at a comment that adds in gratuitous insults about me or people who actually do sign in with accounts and I go "I don't care" and hit delete.

This is your site, and there are plenty of outlets for bigots on English language social media.

They should, if they don't have them, cams. They are excellent quality and dirt cheap in 2015. This would greatly facilitate catching vandals.

I would love, for once, for these types of vandals, to get caught and exposed.

Kindly read the article. They do have cameras.

of the vandalism? Will it be made public by them? Maybe police will get it and post it on their site.

Some geinus(es) vandalized the BLM sign outside the church at the corner of Mass Ave & Pleasant Street about a week ago. And the church did put up another sign quickly.

I don't go to First Parish anymore, but I was there when the town wanted to put the nativity scene on the lawn and the church said no.

Perhaps a "Black Lives Matter" Nativity Scene is in order? Were I still a congregant, I'd bring it up as a possibility.

And the rest of the usual suspects (wise men, Joseph) would fit right in to the BLM protest theme, as they too were all white in most representations.

Of course, the sheep and oxen statues would need PETA approval stickers.

Put 6' tall ones chained through cement filled barrels under the "star" (streetlights at Mass Ave and Rt. 60). They have the privilege to escape punishment.

You don't know much about UUism, do ya, Moxie? Hint: these churches do hold barbecues and such.

up

Nope. I'm a recovering Catholic.

up
Voting closed 0

You'd find common ground with half a typical UU Congregation in these parts.

up
Voting closed 0

That's hurting admin's tender liberal ears, better tone it down a bit before he comes out with his banhammer.

up

You do realize that members of these congregations gave their lives in the civil rights struggle? They left their comfortable and privileged existence behind, struggled for equality, and were murdered alongside those they came to assist because certain people didn't want to accept that Black Lives Matter.

You would be well served to look up who the Freedom Riders were and what they were about - and how many of them were brutally murdered by people who couldn't stand the thought of equality.

What was that about your "right" to make ignorant remarks on a private forum, again?

Swirly, besides the objection to the nativity scene, the other hypocritical, "liberal" oppositions to free speech in Arlington have been the vandalization of other political lawn signs over the years including my lawn signs for the ballot question on keeping 4 lanes on Mass Ave (which won in the polls, but ignored by democratically elected representatives), and lawn signs for republican candidates.

The Arlington UU Church also seems to be in violation of town zoning bylaws for its lawn sign.

What's the deal with the new church across the street and down a bit on Mass Ave? It seems jam packed with young families every time I go past. They conservative?

up
Voting closed 0

Highrock is evangelical, but not the sort that tells you how to vote. I have several friends who are active in that church. They draw from a much larger area than Arlington.

In contrast, there are UU churches in nearly every city and town around here, so their congregations are local.

If they were running down children with cars, you'd be there every Sunday!

Then again, I've never seen you working in the food pantry, either.
