Orange Line riders to lose another pedestrian shortcut

On the heels of the shutdown of the Gardenside entrance to the Orange and Green Lines at North Station comes news that the pedestrian tunnel from Back Bay to Copley Place will be shut through December, starting March 6, so that Simon Co. can make the Dartmouth Street side of their mall less of a forbidding, soulless expanse of a wall, or something.

Why don't they work on the side across from the library, which has NO SIDEWALK?

They're building a new building there. This has nothing to do with improvements to the sidewalk, although those appear to be included as well.

There is intentionally no sidewalk there because MassDOT thinks it's too dangerous for people to cross the Mass Pike off-ramp.

Especially when the police officers
only mimic the cycling of the traffic lights (which are badly timed in the first place), regardless of how many pedestrians are overcrowding the sidewalks and how few cars are on the street. In other words, a typical rush hour on Causeway Street.

Does anyone actually use that underpass?
I remember when I first moved here in the late 90s, there was no crosswalk at street level. So people would cut across traffic. I think they wanted people to use the underpass but people never did so the put in a crosswalk a few years later (~2002 ish)

It connects the railroad and subway stations indoors to Copley Place (and thus, also to the Prudential Center, Hynes Convention Center, and several hotels). It's quite useful.

Once they cleaned up the tunnel (for the DNC, I believe) and the tunnel no longer had a smell that would peel your eyeballs, I started using the it, particularly in bad weather. It takes you right to the Orange line platform and you can hear the announcements while you're in the tunnel.

When the weather is lousy it's great being able to walk along the Back Bay inside. You just need to know where the malls and hotels connect.

Nice of anyone to post notice at the entrances to the underpass. Same with the Franklin Street exit at DTX - they didn't post any announcements until it shut.
Causeway Street wasn't much better
The T didn't really attempt to get the word out until a few days before the actual closure.
that's not true
I enter at DTX every day. And used the franklin entrance daily when I would leave the Gym. There was signs for about a month before stating the entrance would be closed along with stuff on mbta.com
Entrance to Copley Place across from BPL was closed last week.
This may be part of the same project but when I tried to enter Copley Place after leaving the Library last week, the entrance on St. James at Dartmouth was sealed with no explantation.

Safest crossing in Back Bay
Actually, it's a really safe crossing there. The light responds immediately to the walk light request and there is good visibility in both directions. There's even a median with room to wait if you didn't bother with the light.
