Citizen complaint of the day: It's a shame car batteries are so good these days

A possibly sleep-deprived citizen reported at 11:04 a.m. that this mini-van's alarm had been "going off every 15 minutes or so for the past 5 hours."
At 5:45 p.m. Jana reported the damn thing was still going off. She added somebody left a note on the car, but that the car's windows are still intact.

Get it towed
I'm pretty sure you can call the police, and they will come and tow it away. It's a public nuisance when the alarm goes off for so long. You could try it.
Not always...
Last week there was a car near my house doing this same thing, for hours. It was during the day. I was working from home. I called the police. They said they would check it out, but they didn't.
I finally called the management company of the building where the car was parked, luckily my hunch that they also managed the lot was correct. Within minutes the owner came out and put an end to it. I can't believe she didn't hear it!!

Back in the early eighties..
...when I lived in Allston, car alarms went off all the time. Just glance at the car and the alarm went off.. incessantly. Until the battery died. One night an alarm went off and did.not.stop. The police said they were getting tons of calls but there was nothing they could do about it (they explained why but I don't remember).
Some minutes later, a large crowd of neighbors are gathered around the car figuring out how to break into it. They managed to do it without breaking any glass and they turned off the alarm. A large cheer went up not only from the crowd in the street but also from all the apartment windows.
Nothing beats community activism.

Audible car alarms are obsolete and must go away
I know insurance companies still discount them, but does anyone actually pay attention to audible car alarms? Does anyone ever believe it's a real break in? Did they ever?
With GPS systems (LoJack, etc), or silent alarms that can alert a car owner via smartphone, it's time to get rid of those silly alarms no one pays attention to anymore anyway.
Plus, I live near a commuter rail stop, and there have been several idiots over the years leasing from the lot across the street with an alarm that goes off every time a train passes by. It's idiotic and irresponsible.

And until 100% of the cars out there have those systems, and until 100% of car owners both have smartphones and choose to have the necessary apps, having audible car alarms will still be a necessary alternative for some people.
Plus, GPS systems and silent alarms may help police track and retrieve stolen vehicles, but when's the last time you saw a car being driven down the street with its audible alarm blaring?
