Police: Teens in stolen car smash into four other cars on Storrow Drive, then try to escape by running into the Charles
UPDATED with more details from State Police.
Storrow Drive outbound by the Esplanade became mess shortly after 11:25 a.m. due to a pileup caused by two 17-year-olds from Brighton in a stolen car who proved unable to drive very well.
State Police report that after smashing into four cars, the two men inside jumped out and tried to escape by swimming in the Charles. They failed at that as well, however, and are now in custody.
State Police provide this account:
At approximately 11:25 am today, Massachusetts State Trooper Joseph Pierre, assigned to the State Police Barracks in Boston, was on patrol on Storrow Drive westbound near the Bowker Overpass when he observed a stolen white 2008 Hyundai Elantra traveling in the same direction. The Elantra had been reported stolen earlier today out of Boston.
Trooper Joseph activated his cruiser's emergency lights and attempted to stop the stolen car.
The operator, a 17-year-old male, attempted to evade Trooper Joseph as he tried to stop the vehicle on Storrow Drive. The suspect vehicle, which was also occupied by a 17-year-old male passenger, subsequently crashed into several other vehicles, causing minor damage and one injury.
Both suspects exited the vehicle and ran into the Charles River. Trooper Joseph, assisted by Trooper Anthony Wosny, who responded from a nearby detail, convinced the suspects to exit the water on their own accord. The troopers placed the suspects under arrest and transported them to the Boston Barracks for booking.
The pursuit of vehicle lasted approximately 10 seconds and went a distance of approximately 200 yards at slow speeds.
The Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports both were held in lieu of $100,000 bail at their arraignment this afternoon. Their names were not released, the DA's office reports, on account of "being old enough to know better but not old enough to appear in the adult session."
The driver was formally charged with being delinquent for larceny of a motor vehicle, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, use of a motor vehicle without authority, and failure to stop for police. The passenger was charged with delinquency for receiving stolen property.

Wow
That is some spectacular high-level stupidity. Were they expecting to escape via a high speed swim chase? Seriously? Also, now they are covered in the Charles' water. Which, while it is way less polluted than it used to be, is still pretty gross.
And it's chilly in there
Sailing teams were still wearing dry-suits as of a week or so ago.
This is what usually happens

You don't always hear about the smart ones.
Yeah, genius
Run up the pedestrian ramp and to Beacon Street, you may blend in pretty well with the people there.
Jump in the river, it's not going to be hard for MSP to tell you apart from the other idiots swimming in the river (none).

Ah, you are right
Honorable mention maybe? :)
That is REALLY nuts!
The fact that these guys smashed up four other cars, and then tried to escape by running into the Charles is the craziest road antic that I've read/heard of yet! How irresponsible can people be? I hope the law really throws the book at those guys! It would serve them right, imho. Glad to hear they are now in custody.
Don't worry
They'll be given a stern talking-to.
Right?
It's not like they bought hot dogs past closing or were dancing at a bar that didn't have a license for it...
Nor did they flee a bar fight
Nor did they flee a bar fight and go outside with a drink in their hand. Now those fleeing people they are awful.
yeah
Though they're kind of boned given they hit cars, and not pedestrians or bicyclists. I don't even think the latter results in a stern talking-to.
Punishment will be minimal for one big reason
These bozos are JUVENILES.
OMG
Scary Teenagers!
They are driving age, and that actually does matter in this sort of thing.
Not that you would know. Your brain only processes black and white.
Go hide under your desk now.
Ha ha ha!
As if this:
would really be enough. They need to be arrested, fined, and put in the clink for awhile.
Don't be cruel
Haven't they suffered enough already?
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!
ROFLMAO!
Their sentence
Swim in the Charles every day for a year. No excuses. I'll cut a hole in the ice for 'em if it freezes next winter.

I don't get it
If they had their own Accord, why did they take someone else's Elantra?
