If you are transporting contraband, obey the laws and don't stand out.

Or, do what those North End purveyors of illegal fireworks used to do: hire a cop to run interference.

.... you do know that those "We pulled him over for 'driving erratically' and found 12 kg of cocaine in the trunk'... busts are not due to drug couriers driving like idiots, but are instead based on carefully developed intelligence and inside tips; using "driving erratically" gives you a solid basis for the stop that doesn't reveal your sources and methods nor blow the cover of your insiders, right?

One time I was driving in to the city on Rt 9 and this big SUV with two "urban"-looking fellows was tailgating me something fierce. So I change lanes to let him pass and he starts tailgating and changing lanes to get ahead through the rush hour traffic when I notice that his rear is really low on his back wheels, almost like he's got a load of something heavy stashed back there that he's trying to deliver to Roxbury or wherever it was he was going. Some people really are amateurs.

And no I didn't call it in because I didn't have the presence of mind to remember anything specific enough about it to justify a police report.

are stuffing enough drugs into an SUV to compress the rear suspension, and then driving it across town at rush hour? Put down the whistle, for Christ's sake. Be a nice troll.

Or maybe it was full of tools and construction materials.

to get those tools and construction materials to where they were going, though.

My point is that it looked out-of-place, no matter who was behind the wheel. It could have been innocent enough (minus the aggressive driving, that is). But it might have not been. And it's entirely possible that the guy in the story really was driving like a maniac enough for him to get pulled over without prior intel.

Sometimes the cops get lucky. When they started busting people for fare jumping in NYC, the cops would get 1/3 to 1/2 who were warrant jumpers, too.

This was also exactly the sort of situation where cops would be looking for people driving erratically - 2am, holiday weekend night, big drinking holiday, etc.

In any case, this was not a random screening stop event either way.
