Rain, maybe some ennui, cut into midnight lines at area big boxes

Outside the Walpole Walmart, 11:50 p.m.
Normally, the lines outside the Walmart in Walpole and the Best Buy in Dedham for the Black Friday sales start Thursday morning and stretch way, way back around the sides of the building.
Tonight, though, most of the twisty lanes Walmart created with barriers to slow the hordes went empty. And the woman who was second in line - she hoped to snag one of the 25 or so Hatchimals rumored to be inside the store - only got there at 4:30 p.m.
It was a similarly short line at the Best Buy - it barely reached the two port-a-potties the store had put in for waiting customers.

Blame the weather and the internet but the malls and box stores will go the way of the failing newspapers. Perhaps Maura Healey could set up a hotline to report failing stores along with all of those attacks by Trump supporters. Awaiting a FedEx arrival tomorrow, won't go near a mall.

.. offer free returns to their brick and mortar stores will increase their customer base. On-line shopping is easy and returning to a physical store is much easier than repacking and arranging shipping.
Maybe that used to be the case.
With Amazon now you print a label and affix it to the re-sealable package the clothes came in. Put it in a UPS dropbox. It seems that as soon as UPS scans it in then you get the refund.

Love this about Amazon. Easy Returns and no waiting. I bought an A/C via Amazon that arrived broken. I did a return and as soon as UPS picked up, I had my refund. No wait. No "next business day". It automatically went my account.

Yes, but after you try the clothes on or hold the frying pan, you check the price on Amazon, see that it is better, place the order, (and since you have Prime shipping is $0), and plan on the items being delivered in the next 2 days. You did all that in the store on your phone. Then you leave the store.
Probably why Amazon started branching out into

Google Express pick up in the parking lot, amazing prices, and their workers are treated decently, too.
I bought a set of frying pans there and got to pick them up and heft them, too! That set was less than half the price of anything on amazon.

They were right in the entry and I got some to replace some worn out ones and they are really nice! Now I wish I'd snagged a set to put away for my soon-to-fledge son before they sold out of them (they don't even have them on the Costco website anymore). Maybe people were checking Amazon ...

I spent a few hours at Fallon
I spent a few hours at Fallon Field today enjoying the new playground. Driving up Route 1, I forgot to check out the line at Best Buy Dedham on our way home because I totally forgot it was the start of Black Friday. Usually I have at least a few friends and/or family with some sort of plans to score something from the "supplies are limited" offerings. Nada this year. This entry here is the first time I heard of a Hatchimal.

Return to sanity?
I have no problem with Black Friday Shopping. It's not my bag, but I understand the merits of going shopping on a rare weekday off, and maybe all the women going off together for lunch and socializing and shopping after the serious labor that is Thanksgiving.
That said, I would love to see this culture of early openings (midnight? 5 am?) and long lines go away. But I suppose places want to cultivate all the publicity they can....
