Peak coffee: Jamaica Plain about to get another coffee place

In a neighborhood where even banks are replaced by coffeehouses, an entrepreneur hopes to open another place to caffeinate.

The Boston Licensing Board next week considers a request for a food-serving license for Espresso Yourself, which Feruz Tairov is planning for the space formerly occupied by the Uforge Gallery at 762 Centre St., near the Monument.

The shop would fill the critical non-Dunkin' coffee gap that now exists between Caffe Nero and Fiore's Bakery.

The board's hearings begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in Room 809 in City Hall.

I guess it makes sense. We do need to develop more of a coffeehouse culture before we can have a true revolution.

... but the name, not so convinced.

Who knows how many innocent lives have been lost to caffeine withdrawal, thinking they could make it from Nero to Fiore but succumbing while traversing the Java Desert.

Ugh, how about an arts' supply shop or a place to buy a dish towel? Still missing the Woolworths where I supplied my first apartment in JP.

I mean, it'd be nice but I can't imagine in a million years that there's enough demand on something with art supply margins to pay for JP retail, especially when there's Blick nearby and of course Amazon everywhere.

Food and services are the future of local retail space. Everything else is marginal. I wouldn't be surprised to see more hybrids though, like a coffee shop that sells some stuff like art supplies, etc...

Which may just be proof of the fact I've never been in the place, but Kitchen Witch doesn't sell dish towels?

There's a big sign on their door that says "We do NOT sell dishtowels." :-P

YES!!! Thank you for reminding me about Woolworth's on Centre Street! You've made my day! I miss Hailer's Pharmacy and Brigham's, too.

..Hyde Park continues to be overrun by hair salons.

You're always welcome to change that - with your own money.

You can drink coffee in a hair salon, but good luck getting your hair cut (or whatever) at a coffee shop.

Will the elderly not feel uncomfortable walking in?

Espresso yourself should have been a store next door on Bob's Burgers, but apparently it isn't. Grindecologist coffee did make the cut, though.

Did I understand this right? The Dunkins on Centre Street is gone?

No, and in fact there are two (the other is a Tedeschi's hybrid store next to Yumont/Citizens). It's just that there is no Dunkies in the opposite direction toward South St. In fact, the new place will actually share the block with the main Dunks.

That Tedeschi with the Dunkin's has actually just closed, I hear to be replaced with a 7-Eleven.

Until they change the name to "EspressYoSelf" I will be opposing them at neighborhood meetings.
