The time an off-duty officer lost his cool in a supermarket line because of the fool in front of him
By adamg on Sun, 05/21/2017 - 9:32am
Officer Mike Keaney at District C-11 recounts what happened when he was standing in line at the supermarket after the Pulse nightclub mass murder and the guy in front of him said it didn't matter because the victims were "just" gay.
"Just gay!" I yelled, surprising everyone in the store, including myself. "Just gay! Those poor souls are just someone’s sons, daughters, or loved ones."
Being the parent of a gay son, I couldn’t fathom the dismissive tone of that knuckle-dragging caveman’s comment or the fact that he felt so comfortable saying it in a crowd. Publicly shamed as he was, he didn’t utter another word while I was in the store.

Too bad it doesn't let me give this a "heart" or a "thankful" flower instead of a "thumbs up".

I know Mike and he's a wonderful man. I would have paid good money to have been able to see him go off on that nitwit. Good on you Mike.

Mighty Mike
Mike Keaney is an excellent example of a police officer whose courage and commitment to the city of Boston deserves to recognized. The work of the community service officers of the Boston Police is one of the key partnerships that bring peace to this city.
Thanks Officer Keaney
I am a gay man who lives in Dorchester. Thanks for saying and doing the right thing.
Mike Kearney sounds like a good guy.
I hope that supermarket twit is less of a twit now.
Community service officers are some of the best skilled police officers. Carlos Martinez and Carlos Lara of District E-13 are two of the best of the best. I admire them and applaud them along with Mike Kearney.
Good writer too
The rest of his column is quite an entertaining depiction of the street cop experience.
I've lived in quite a few places...
(And yes, it's anecdotal but...)
Boston Police are really some of the finest officers in the entire country.
Lucky father, lucky son
Lucky father, lucky son
God Bless Officer Keaney, but any officer should do it
I don't know Officer Keaney but wish him and his son the best in life. C-11 has a great crew. That said, as a police officer, you don't need a gay son or a column to do the right thing.
I like the Dorchester Reporter, although like most media, they skew far-left. It is well known that our police voted heavily for President Trump. If the article is meant to subtly suggest that Officer Keaney is an exception or a "light in the forest" and other officers wouldn't do the same thing, I disagree, strongly. I hope he would agree that any other officer would act the same.
Why do you have to try to
Why do you have to try to make this anything but what it is? It's a great article about a wonderful man that happens to be a cop and a loving father. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
From one cop to another: can
From one cop to another: can you please shut the fuck up about Trump?
Every single post, he's all you mention.
Is he all you think about?
Do you blame all of your problems on the divide between the left and the right?
I know plenty of good cops who don't support that unhinged lunatic.
"Every single post, he's all you mention"
C'mon, you know that's not true. He also frequently recounts his glorious phone call to Manila when he cancelled his Globe subscription due to his outrage over the fake Trump front page....
Never mind, carry on.
You seem ignorant of how newspaper columns work
The Reporter didn't write that column. Officer Keaney did.
Yes, other officers would quite possibly react the same way (except, perhaps, the ones who write for Pax Centurion), but the fact that his son is gay helps explain how the comment might have hurt him more than somebody else - and how he knows first hand how truly spiteful that one word was.
Also as a police blotter
This is exceptionally well-written. Thanks, Adam and Officer Keaney!
Pax Centurion doesn't speak for the force

The center is the middle
Media serve their market. The political center of the media is about the same as the political center of their readership / viewership.
I think someone who speaks up
I think someone who speaks up in defense of gay people would be better off saying something like, They are as fully human as you are, with the same feelings and concerns, with views as valid as anyone else's, with the challenge of achieving the same purpose in life as everyone else has.
More from this guy, please
Sure, the bit you reference was great, but even without it the column was gold. Four great stories, mostly about people being idiots in their different ways.
Hats off to you, Officer Keaney! Way to go!
That jerk who made the insulting remark(s) about your son, and gays, generally, in a public place, deserved to be told off! Way to go!
Officer Mike
I believe would of been in his rights to do more than what he did to this jerk. Heroic just for keeping his hands to himself
Officer Keaney did the smart thing.
Just simply telling the jerk off publicly, without resorting to physical violence on him was the smart thing to do. Officer Keaney did right.
