The time an off-duty officer lost his cool in a supermarket line because of the fool in front of him

Officer Mike Keaney at District C-11 recounts what happened when he was standing in line at the supermarket after the Pulse nightclub mass murder and the guy in front of him said it didn't matter because the victims were "just" gay.
"Just gay!" I yelled, surprising everyone in the store, including myself. "Just gay! Those poor souls are just someone’s sons, daughters, or loved ones."
Being the parent of a gay son, I couldn’t fathom the dismissive tone of that knuckle-dragging caveman’s comment or the fact that he felt so comfortable saying it in a crowd. Publicly shamed as he was, he didn’t utter another word while I was in the store.

Mike Keaney is an excellent example of a police officer whose courage and commitment to the city of Boston deserves to recognized. The work of the community service officers of the Boston Police is one of the key partnerships that bring peace to this city.

Community service officers are some of the best skilled police officers. Carlos Martinez and Carlos Lara of District E-13 are two of the best of the best. I admire them and applaud them along with Mike Kearney.

I don't know Officer Keaney but wish him and his son the best in life. C-11 has a great crew. That said, as a police officer, you don't need a gay son or a column to do the right thing.
I like the Dorchester Reporter, although like most media, they skew far-left. It is well known that our police voted heavily for President Trump. If the article is meant to subtly suggest that Officer Keaney is an exception or a "light in the forest" and other officers wouldn't do the same thing, I disagree, strongly. I hope he would agree that any other officer would act the same.

The Reporter didn't write that column. Officer Keaney did.
Yes, other officers would quite possibly react the same way (except, perhaps, the ones who write for Pax Centurion), but the fact that his son is gay helps explain how the comment might have hurt him more than somebody else - and how he knows first hand how truly spiteful that one word was.

I think someone who speaks up in defense of gay people would be better off saying something like, They are as fully human as you are, with the same feelings and concerns, with views as valid as anyone else's, with the challenge of achieving the same purpose in life as everyone else has.

Just simply telling the jerk off publicly, without resorting to physical violence on him was the smart thing to do. Officer Keaney did right.
