in Mattapan is the correct response, but something tells me this out-of-towner won't be venturing there.

Why not? People visiting New York City who are looking for some of the best food in the world venture out to Brooklyn. Pit Stop is easy to get to and you don't have to drive around in circles to find a place to park. Right off of Route 203. Besides, in this day and age with GPS and Uber, it's easy to get to Mattapan.

The best BBQ I've had in Boston is from the M&M Ribs truck.

Prepare for sticker shock if you visit either Sweet Cheeks or Smoke Shop. Sweet Cheeks only good for biscuits or fried chicken, not BBQ. Blackstrap in Winthrop is my favorite.

I just recently visited the smoke shop in Kendall. I like this the place. Much better than Sweet Cheeks.

Pit Stop Mattapan, hands down!! Most authentic. And I grew up in North Carolina!

American BBQ in Rowley, followed by Blue Ribbon in Arlington. I'm from Kansas City and I know what makes good food. Go Gates in KC!

according to one of their servers, which makes it relevant to the original request. They do some great work in the community too.

Interesting to hear so many recommendations for the Smoke Shop. Granted, I was there last when they just opened, but I found their offerings to lack in flavor yet cost too much.

Blue Ribbon or Red Bones would be my choice (have not been to Sweet Cheeks). There was also a food truck from Boston Barbeque (I think) at the Lexington Battle Green BBQ Festival, they had some good ribs.
