Man stabbed 14 times at Chinatown ATM; suspect in custody

A homeless man is being held without bail pending a "dangerousness" hearing after he was arrested - wearing what appeared to be blood-stained clothes - on a charge that he repeatedly stabbed another man at a Washington Street ATM early Friday, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

At his arraignment for armed assault with intent to murder in Boston Municipal Court yesterday, Lonnie Fitts, 47, was ordered held pending a Monday hearing on whether he should be held up to three months without bail as a threat to public safety, the DA's office reports. The 51-year-old victim, stabbed in both the back and the stomach, has undergone two operations and is expected to survive, the DA's office says.

According to prosecutors, the victim was in the Cathay Bank ATM at 621 Washington St. around 4:40 a.m. on Friday, when Fitts and another man approached him. Prosecutors say the victim knew the other man, but not Fitts.

After a brief interaction, the second man attacked the victim, prosecutors said.

Fitts was identified in security camera images by a Boston Police detective who was familiar with him, and then by two employees of a Boston homeless shelter.

He was arrested at the shelter on Friday afternoon in connection with the assault and an outstanding warrant out of Dorchester Municipal Court charging breaking and entering in the nighttime with intent to commit a felony and vandalizing property.

At his arrest, the DA's office says, Fitts was wearing the same clothing worn by the attacker on surveillance video - only with blood stains. Police collected the clothing for testing.

Innocent, etc.

That corner of Boylston and Washington is definitely one of the sketchiest areas downtown.

You think that's bad you should have seen the same location back in the 70s and 80s. But at least then there were no residences developed in the middle of it all!

You have some of the most destitute people living on the street while some of the trashiest and wealthiest live in luxury a few feet above. A lucrative drug and sex services market spot. Add to that a dangerous intersection for cyclists and pedestrians who are crammed to the sides of Boylston, Essex and Washington while cars and trucks speed honking by.
The only normal living is going on across the intersection at Hong Lok House.
The neighborhood is where the farm where the Liberty Tree once grew was located.
Sketchy, historic and home for all kinds of people.

'sketchy'? That's right up there with 'ghetto'. The real world is not Disneyworld or a suburban mall.

Are we supporting stabbings now? Or are we allowed to think that getting knifed at an ATM is a bad thing? Only "snowflakes" don't like to be butchered on the sidewalks of Boston?

...you just have to understand what that means. The large majority of people passing through that area are just going about their business, but you do have to keep an eye out, a little more than you might in some areas just a few blocks away.

(speaking as someone who uses that ATM regularly, because it's the closest fee-free ATM to my work)
