Boston parking ban ends at 5 p.m. today

The mayor's office announced the ban on parking on snow-emergency routes ends at 5 p.m. And with the 48-hour space-saver rule, that means you can use your cones, chairs and broken Ikea shelving to save your shoveled-out street parking space until 5 p.m. on Sunday.

My neighborhood will be saving spots until Patriots Day.
All of the old timers will be going on about that's how Eastie has done things since 1776, like it our get out.
All of the people who just "discovered" the neighborhood will go on about how people should be following the city's rules.
All of us stuck in the middle will be trying to decide between continuing to use our space savers out of necessity thanks to the old timers leaving us with limited parking, while worrying that some Patagonia jacket will move it on principle; or banking on finding an empty spot that won't get our tires slashed by a townie thanks to one of said Patagonia jackets having previously moved their space saver, unbeknownst to us. All while silently thinking that we just want to live our lives, and trying to determine which of the two groups we hate more.
The circle of life, as it were.

totally being metaphorical. Same thing with "townies"–there are many Eastie natives who are wonderful (and part of why I fell in love with the neighborhood as a pre-boom transplant). They're just not as vocal and crotchety as the ones stuck in the 70's and "old ways" of doing things.
I was just hoping
that there was one secret spot that had not yet been claimed by those northern birds. I have nothing against Canada Geese, but they are an invasive species, and where once they seemed exotic and beautiful, they quickly become an overabundant nuisance.

My young nephew is overly influenced by brand names and was very interested in Canada Goose when we told him about it and his search showed that they cost $830 for one model.
I told him it's probably about a $400 jacket and the patch costs $400 - the other $30 is "because they can".

I bought a $40 parka from Primark in DTX, which has turned out to be one of my best 2017 purchases.

Should've added the space-saver rule doesn't apply to the South End, because you're not allowed to save a space there because of snow ever.

Model for the rest of us
I didn't really follow the process by which residents of the South End successfully lobbied the city to have the law enforced in their neighborhood, but they're a model for the rest of us.
Ban the ban?
I know the snow emergency parking bans are there so emergency corridors are free, but the city never seems to completely plow these roads to the curbs - and they cancel the parking bans so soon they they never get a chance to come back and actually remove the snow.
What tends to happen is people still want to park even though the parking spaces are full of plowed snow - so they end up parking in the travel lane, reducing the road capacity overall by taking a travel lane for parking.
So in reality, do these snow parking bans accomplish much??
There is no snow removal
All they do is push it to the side. The only time they actually removed snow (in 2015) they dumped half of it into the sidewalks and created huge piles on the corners. The parking ban is a good idea regardless. Those evacuation routes could get blocked if we allowed people to park there.
I doubt it helps emergency routes
I think it’s just so plows can move faster during the storm. But it robs Peter to pay Paul. They don’t get within four feet of the curb on some streets, so as of five some streets will barely support two way travel anymore. If cars had been parked, those spots would now be cleared to the curb and the cars would park there again instead of halfway into the travel lane. With each storm now the roads will get narrower - including emergency routes.
what ER routes are you describing?
The ones in Dorchester are substantially wider than non er routes. Its not perfect to be sure. Like I said when they plow to the curb, they just push the snow up on the sidewalks. Its one thing for a plow to avoid hitting a parked car. there is usually some indication that is car is there. But if a plow catches on a granite curb it will bend or break. When they actually removed snow in 2015, they had front loaders and dump trucks hauling it. and even so, they blocked the sidewalks.
Dump Trucks on Tremont
They're using a snowblower attachment on a bulldozer in a parking lane on Tremont Street in the South End to fill dump trucks.
Fingers crossed they're doing this on all snow emergency arteries by 5pm.

Glad to hear this. In the past they would use the 'night after' (like tonight) to start removing snow piles, but they've been slacking in recent years. I'm glad you're seeing some removal taking place - thanks for the update.

.... I have on occasion saved a space. Just for the fun of it.
