Bostonians can save parking spaces until 5 p.m. on Friday - except people in the South End

Mayor Walsh announced today he's lifting the snow emergency at 5 p.m. today. That means residents can save their spaces for 48 hours, or until 5 p.m. on Friday - except in the South End, where spaces can never legally be saved.

But the author’s choice of headlines belies his editorial stance.
The mayor, most likely, said exactly what you think he said, meaning my view was predominant in the statement.
I am a little sad that
this post has been up for an hour and there aren't 100 responses of drivers vs pedestrians, townies vs newbies fighting over the merits of space saving and how entitled all drivers are and how pedestrians art evil.

Coming from the only Mayor
who has altered the route of the St Patrick's Day Parade because of snow. No other administration has had to do this in the history of the parade.

5 feet by 10 feet would be 50 square feet. Say 2 feet of heavy, mushy snow. That’s 100 cubic feet per space times 3, so 300 cubic feet of shoveling. If that’s your thing, do it.

And no one should be allowed to claim a spot that hasn’t been properly shoveled out by the claimant. Sweat equity and whatnot.

By the way, what is the rule in Meffa? I’m willing to bet that in some of the denser, older parts of the city, the rule is “my chair is there until the snow has melted.”
Nope
Space savers are forbidden and people are charged for pickup of their trash because it is outside of their barrel.
Doesn't mean that people don't try, and then whine about getting busted for it, but there is solid support for killing the stupidity before it festers.
In any case, you can only park on one side of the street during a snow emergency, so there isn't any of the nonsense of leaving vehicles for weeks.
So the practice exists in Medford
I did mosey over to the City’s website. It does note it is frowned upon, but no sanction is mentioned. I read that as the city shrugging its corporate shoulders and saying “well, technically it’s not allowed.”

Not that they are good parkers. I believe the crappiness of student parkers. Rather, I would imagine that they have no clue about space saving, and would more likely leave their cars covered in snow than shovel them out.

DPW doesn't do garbage pickup.That's contracted out to a private entity that puts a bounty on busting people.
Nobody should be allowed to claim a parking space..period.
As other people on this site have posted, streets are public places, and nobody owns the space that they park in. The "You shovel it, you own it" mentality has gone too far, here in Boston, generally.

Slash the tires of any car you find parked on a part of the street that you think is yours.
If you're going to be stupidly lawless, go full drunken dementia psycho, just assume that anyone in your space knowingly moved your spacesaver, and proceed directly to execution.
Because that's the natural outcome when we ignore real laws, and that's why many of us hate the spacesaver lawlessness.

where the DPW does all the plowing???? Is this even possible? I am speaking about 210 Old Colony Ave and the 311 folks came right out to remove the cones. Thank you Marty! Enough w these space savers!
Universal Hub to the rescue!
I just watched a neighbor pull out of a spot I'm pretty sure his car melted out of (rather than was actually dug out of) then stop to put an overturned garbage can into. Thought about actually putting some boots on and moving the can, but figured that some poor sap would park in the space and my obviously anti-social neighbor might take his frustration out on that car. Then it occurred to me to double check with Uhub on how long this foolishness was allowed to go on by the Mayor.
Maybe I'll put some boots on at 5...
