Gate slams shut in Jamaica Plain

Boston Restaurant Talk reports the Gate on Washington Street in Egleston Square has closed its doors, barely 11 months after it opened as a replacement for the shuttered James's Gate on South Street.

The building housing the Gate was posted for sale today.

... as long as when it was the Old Stag.

Ah yes, the Old Stag. Old School JP favorite. No frills and cheap.

The Stag was a miserable and extremely dangerous bar. No one enjoyed that place. You did not go there to have a fun time.

Yet it was there longer before its successors!

The Stag was a great place to go when you really, seriously, truly needed to drink.

I had meant to go there but it was really out of the way. If it had moved somewhere else on Centre Street, then maybe it would have had more success.

Damn, I remember hearing that they were going to "move" there but never heard that they actually opened. Used to love James's Gate. Pity.

The Gate had none of the charm of the pub side of James Gate(or any good Irish bar). The bar had this weird neon lighting that clashed in an Irish bar. Hopefully someone else will try with that location, especially with a 75 unit apartment building rising up across the street.

Centre Street isn't far from Egleston.

What ever happened to all the chit-chat about opening some sort of a community co-op bar on the first floor of the new condo building that is going up where the old James Gate used to stand? Maybe I just dreamed this up.

After looking at the photos in the sales page, I hope someone buys it and keeps it as a restaurant. It looks great inside and has all the equipment. Having lively restaurants in an upcoming area is great for everyone.

What is your idea of an "upcoming" area?
