Jamaica Pond used to have a few more swans than it does today

Swans at Jamaica Pond

The Emerald Necklace Conservancy shows us a typical Jamaica Pond scene in 1910.

As Ben Evans notes:

Feeding small children to swans was outlawed in 1923.

As an original post card, when the pond attracted lots of people during the summer.

everything's gone to hell since 1923. Zeus (who still has a soft spot for Leda, and thus identifies strongly with swans) does not like being denied his tribute.

But feeding swans to small children continued at the nearby "Mrs. Hannigan's Home for Unfortunate Children" until the mid '70s.

Or maybe the swans turned black, now identify as geese and moved closer to the fens to be closer to the Red Sox!

Try Farm Pond in Framingham north of the train station. I counted 50 one day last year. About 25 three weeks ago.

... when swans were well fed and children were more respectful.

...maybe caused by Roslindale thugs heading over to the Pond?

Stopped by a wall just trying to find a place to lay some eggs.
Bummer.

Where are all the turkeys?
